@OW_Panthers Baseball splits on Day 3 at Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

Old Westbury closes out play Tuesday (Mar. 19) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic against #9 Johns Hopkins University

FORT MYERS, FL --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball opened Monday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with a 10-2 non-conference setback to the Williams College Ephs (1-0) and then bounced back with an 8-6 non-conference triumph against the Gallaudet University Bisons (5-11) from Lee County Player Development Complex No. 3 in Fort Myers, Florida.

Williams 10, Old Westbury 2
Old Westbury broke the scoring ice in the first inning with two runs off Eph starter John Lamont (ND, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 3 K).  Peter Capel (2-for-3, 2 RBI, BB) used a one-out single to round home Sean Poprocki (1-for-3, R, BB) and Brandon Wilson for the Panthers' early lead.

Panther starter Mike Homan (L, 0-1: 2.1 IP, 7 ER, 2 BB, K) surrendered four runs on four hits during a decisive second inning.  Erik Mini slapped a leadoff double to center field before scoring off a Doug Schaffer game-tying double. Schaffer would then score the game-winning run one batter later on a RBI single by David Kwan.

The Ephs tacked on three more runs in the third frame to extend its lead to five (7-2) to cut Homan's outing short.

Williams added two runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth off reliever Steven Tellerias (ND, 3.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) before Jalen Bertie and Vinny Trovato combined to pitch two scoreless innings.

Daniel Lynch (W, 1-0: 2 IP, K) tossed two perfect innings to snag the win for Williams.

Old Westbury 8, Gallaudet 6
Shea Sliva-Wynne scored the game's initial run off Panther starter Eddie Guzman (W, 1-0: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 4 BB, K) during the opening inning courtesy of a Austin Sliva-Wynne's sacrifice fly for Gallaudet's early advantage.

Old Westbury responded in the bottom half of the first with two runs scored off Bison starter Darren Drolsbaugh (L, 1-1; 7.1 IP, 11 H, 8 R, 2 BB, 3 K).  Capel ignited the Panthers with a two-run single to right center to plate home Wilson (1-for-3, RBI, R, BB, SB) and John Condon (2-for-2, 3 RBI, 2 R, BB) for the 2-1 lead.

The Panthers added a run in the fourth inning with Matt Daulton's two-out RBI triple to score Condon for the 3-1 edge.

Condon delivered a two-run single in the fifth to extend the lead to four (5-1).

Gallaudet sliced the deficit to two runs in the sixth inning as Matt Scuderi singled to right field off reliever Matt Bohenek to bring home Austin Sliva-Wynne and Ryan Gilbert.

Leading 5-3 in the seventh, Wilson's single drove in Michael Borsch (2-for-4, R) before Condon followed with a sacrifice fly to advance Poprocki across home plate for the game-winning run.

Reliever Joe Sarni (S 1: 2 IP, H, 2 BB, K) worked two innings to earn his first-career save after inheriting the bases loaded in the eighth inning.  He uncorked a wild pitch to Scuderi to make it a three-score game, and after issuing a walk, a throwing error by shortstop Shaun Kaminski (2-for-4, SB) yielded two runs to make it a 7-6 game.

Old Westbury added an insurance run in the eighth with a Joshua Cruz (2-for-3, RBI, R) two-out RBI single to score Drew Robertson to settle the 8-6 final.

#9 JOHNS HOPKINS BLUE JAYS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury closes out play Tuesday (Mar. 19) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with a 3 p.m. non-conference matchup against the #9 Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays (10-3) from Terry Park Sports Complex No. 1 in Fort Myers, Florida.  The Panthers are 0-2 against the Blue Jays since 2017.
