@OW_Panthers Baseball kicks off Skyline slate at Mount Saint Vincent

Old Westbury closes its 13-game road trip Monday (Mar. 25) with a Skyline Conference doubleheader against Yeshiva University

CHESTER, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball opened Skyline Conference play Saturday afternoon with 6-5 and 2-1 losses to the College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (5-5, 2-0 Skyline) from Frozen Ropes in  Chester, New York. The Panthers (3-7-1, 0-2 Skyline) entered winners of 15-straight games versus Mount Saint Vincent dating back to the 2011 season.

Game 1: Mount Saint Vincent 6, Old Westbury 5
Panther starter Adam Heidenfelder (ND: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 6 K) got the run support needed in his second outing of the season, but ultimately settled for a no-decision as the bullpen was charged with six runs on seven hits and four walks in 3.2 innings of relief.

Old Westbury broke the scoring ice in the second inning with a one-out single by Drew Robertson that drove in two.  Michael Borsch (2-for-4, RBI) then drilled a RBI single to push the lead to three on Dolphin starter Peter Sanderson (ND, 7 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 0 BB, 4 K).

Peter Capel (3-for-4, 2 RBI, R, SB) extended Old Westbury's advantage to five with RBI singles to score Brandon Wilson (2-for-5, 2 R, SB) in the third and fifth innings.

Jake Blinstrub opened the seventh inning scoring with a RBI double off reliever Panther Patrick Quinn (2.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K).  The Dolphins sliced their deficit to two with a Matt DiNorcia (2-for-5, RBI, R) RBI single and a Anthony Nocero run-scoring groundout in the frame.

Mount Saint Vincent pulled within one (5-4) on a Eric Zimmermann sacrifice fly to score DiNorcia in the ninth inning off reliever Joe Sarni (L, 1-1: 1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, BB, K).  Two batters later, Matt Albert whacked a two-out walk-off single to score Zachary Saunders (2-for-5, R) and pinch runner Anthony Faldetta to settle the 6-5 final.

Nick Saranczak (W, 1-0) scattered four hits in two scoreless innings of relief to earn Mount Saint Vincent's win.

Game 2 (8 Inn.): Mount Saint Vincent 2, Old Westbury 1
Mount Saint Vincent took a 1-0 lead on Panther starter Christian Tessitore (ND: 7 IP, 5 H, ER, 2 BB, 5 K) in the first inning with a DiNorcia triple followed by a Nocero (2-for-4, RBI, R) grounder to open the scoring.

Old Westbury evened the score in the third as Borsch (3-for-3, R) poked a double to right center before scoring two batters later on a Sean Paprocki (2-for-4, RBI) run-scoring single to second off Dolphin starter Tommy Sharfetz (ND: 6.1 IP, 5 H, ER, BB, 2 K).

The Panthers had a chance to win it in the seventh as pinch hitter Nic Labiento dropped down a sacrifice bunt followed by Borsch spraying a single to right center to advance Brandon DiMauro to third.  Reliever Pedro Fortoso (W, 1-0: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 K) was called on to induce a ground out that got DiMauro at home before retiring Paprocki on strikes to strand two runners.

With the game headed to extra innings, Capel and Shaun Kaminski both produced two-out singles prior to being stranded by DiMauro's rally-ending ground out in the eighth.

Matt Bohenek (L, 0-1: 0.2 IP, 3 H, ER, BB, K) relieved Tessitore in the bottom of the eighth and surrendered back-to-back singles and an intentional walk to load the bases.  Two batters later, Zimmermann poked a walk-off single up the middle to score Nocero.

YESHIVA UNIVERSITY MACCABEES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury closes its 13-game road trip Monday (Mar. 25) with a 3:30 p.m. Skyline Conference doubleheader against the  Yeshiva University Maccabees from Silver Lake Park in West Harrison, New York. The Panthers enter with a 22-game winning streak versus Yeshiva dating back to 2008.
