@OW_Panthers Softball walks off with home-opening sweep against Lehman

Old Westbury travels Wednesday (Mar. 20) for a non-conference showdown against Notre Dame of Maryland University

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury softball opened their home schedule Monday afternoon with 2-1 and 8-0 non-conference wins to sweep the Lehman College Lightning (1-7) from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  The Panthers (4-2) have now won 18-straight games versus Lehman dating back to the 2008 season.

Game 1: Old Westbury 2, Lehman 1
Panther starter Nicole Baron (W, 2-1: 7 IP, 3 H, R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 13 K) retired six of the first-10 batters on strikes before a fielding error by first baseman Amanda Neenan extended the third inning.  Caitlin Vernon then singled home Stephany Cruz for the game's initial run before Baron got Tiffany Adames swinging to strand two runners.

Johanna Metz led off Old Westbury's fourth with a double off starter Diamond Villegas (L, 1-3: 6.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 9 K).  Two batters later, Jessica Schwartz delivered the equalizer to drive in Metz with a triple to left field.

With a tied game headed to the bottom of the seventh, Baron (2-for-3, R, BB) reached base with her second double of the game and advanced to third on a Kristin Grieshaber ground out.  Two batters later, Samantha Arcese drilled a long two-out single to the center field fence to score Baron for the walk-off win.

Baron claimed victory by finishing with a career-high 13 strikeouts, Old Westbury's highest total since Alyssa Clancy totaled 14 against York College on March 1, 2013.

Game 2 (5 Inn.):  Old Westbury 8, Lehman 0
The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead on Adames as the Lightning committed three errors.  Baron (0-for-1, RBI, R, 2 BB) worked a leadoff walk and scored after a trio of miscues to open the scoring.  Four batters later, Old Westbury doubled its advantage with a Metz (2-for-2, RBI, R, BB) RBI single to score Grieshaber (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI) for the second run.

Old Westbury put the game away in the third frame with six runs on seven hits to settle the 8-0 run-rule victory.  The Panthers opened the inning with four-straight singles, and two batters later, Schwartz (1-for-3, 3 RBI, R) highlighted the frame by swatting a three-run single to make it a 6-0 game.

Pitching with run support, Baron (W, 3-1: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 6 K) scattered four hits and struck out six to go the distance for her fourth-career shutout.

NOTRE DAME OF MARYLAND UNIVERSITY GATORS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels Wednesday (Mar. 20) to Baltimore for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against the Notre Dame of Maryland University Gators (1-1) from CCBC Dundalk Field.
