@OW_Panthers Baseball sweeps Yeshiva to grab first Skyline wins

Old Westbury opens its 16-game home schedule Wednesday (Mar. 27) against Vassar College

WEST HARRISON, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball closed their 13-game road trip Monday afternoon in West Harrison, New York with 7-1 and 8-4 Skyline Conference road wins over the Yeshiva University Maccabees (1-9, 0-6 Skyline) from Silver Lake Park.  The Panthers (5-7-1, 2-2 Skyline) have now won 24-straight games versus Yeshiva dating back to 2008.

Game 1: Old Westbury 7, Yeshiva 1
Old Westbury jumped ahead with a pair of first inning runs on Yeshiva starter Yosef Rosenfield (L, 0-1: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB).  Sean Paprocki (1-for-4, 2 R, BB, 2 SB) led off with a single and then scored on a Brandon Wilson (1-for-5, 2 R, RBI, SB) RBI single. Wilson then scored the game-winning run two batters later on a fielding error by first baseman David Kreisberg.

The Panthers took advantage of two throwing errors in the third to advance one run across and then took a 4-0 lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Michael Borsch (1-for-2, 3 RBI, BB) to score Vinny Trovato (2-for-3, R, BB, 4 SB).

Yeshiva singled to lead off the home half of the fourth, and scored four batters later on Max Goldstein's RBI single that made it a 4-1 game.

Old Westbury tacked on three runs in the seventh inning off reliever Rafi Jacobs (3.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, BB, 4 K) highlighted by a RBI single by John Condon (2-for-5, RBI, R), and Borsch's two-run single four batters later to settle the 7-1 final.

Panther starter Jason Espinal (1-0) allowed one run, scattered three hits and fanned five batters in five innings of work to collect Old Westbury's win.  Relievers Steven Tellerias (2 IP, 2 K) and Alipio Tiburcio (2 IP, H, BB) combined to pitch four scoreless innings.

Game 2: Old Westbury 8, Yeshiva 4
Paprocki opened the game with a leadoff inside the park home run to give Old Westbury the early 1-0 lead on Maccabee starter Tannenbaum (ND: 4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, ER, 2 BB, 4 K).

The Panthers capitalized on three errors in the fourth to go up 2-0.

Yeshiva tied the game in the bottom of the frame with David Hanelin's RBI single off reliever Matt Bohenek (W, 1-1: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 8 K), and then crossed the plate two batters later on a passed ball by Joseph Amoroso.

Old Westbury went up 3-2 in the sixth as a fielding error by third baseman Shmuel Silverstein pushed Drew Robertson across home plate.

Yeshiva took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the frame off the power of Aryeh Salovey's two-run homer over the center field fence.

The Maccabees committed two errors that led to Old Westbury putting up a five-spot in the seventh with just one hit.  Shaun Kaminski scored the game-tying run on a throwing error by Silverstein and then a passed ball by Goldstein advanced Wilson home of the game-winning run.  Joshua Cruz then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Mike Homan, and four batters later, Condon broke the game open with a two-run single to cement the 8-4 final.

Bohenek set a career high with eight strikeouts and starter Eddie Guzman (ND: 3 H, 2 R,  ER, 5 BB) retired a career-high five on strikes in 3.1 innings.

VASSAR COLLEGE BREWERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury opens its 16-game home schedule Wednesday (Mar. 27) against the Vassar College Brewers (7-7) at 4 p.m. from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  The Panthers are 2-2-1 versus the Brewers since 2011.
