@OW_Panthers Softball opens Skyline play with St. Joseph’s (L.I.) battle

Old Westbury travels Wednesday (Mar. 27) to St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) for a Skyline conference showdown

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury softball opened Skyline Conference play Saturday afternoon at home with 4-0 and 4-0 setbacks against the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles (6-6, 2-0 Skyline) from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  The Panthers (5-4, 0-2 Skyline) had their five-game winning streak snapped and have now lost 13-straight games to St. Joseph's dating back to the 2013 season.

Game 1: St. Joseph's (L.I.) 4, Old Westbury 0
Panther starter Nicole Baron (L, 4-2: 7 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, K) cruised through 3.2 innings until a two-out fielding error by center fielder Johanna Metz extended the inning.  Zoe Kelly (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI, SB) then broke the scoring ice with a RBI single to score Jillian McFadzen for the game's initial run before Franzelyn Russo's run-scoring triple gave St. Joseph's a 2-0 lead.

Amanda Neenan (1-for-2) stroked a one-out single to lead the Panthers' fourth inning threat.  After placing three runners on base, Golden Eagle starter Catherine Zucker (W, 2-2: 7 IP, H, 3 BB, 8 K) escaped out of the jam unschathed on her way to posting her first-career shutout.

St. Joseph's went up 4-0 on Baron with RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings.

Baron stranded 12 Golden Eagles on base to log her sixth complete game of the year.  Old Westbury allowed four stolen bases for the second time this season.

Game 2: St. Joseph's (L.I.) 4, Old Westbury 0
Metz (2-for-3) put Old Westbury in the hit column with a two-out bunt single in the first inning off Golden Eagle starter Alyssa Rivera (W, 3-1: 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 5 K).

Baron (L, 4-3: 7 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) tossed 3.2 innings of no-hit ball to return back to her dominant self in the early goings of game two.  Elise Grau ended Baron's no-hit bid with a two out single.

Locked in a pitcher's duel with neither team advancing past first base through four innings, pinch runner Jenna Kreiling stole second and advanced to third as shortstop Mallory Moretti misplayed a strike to second by catcher Samantha Arcese.  Kassandra Tibbetts then stepped to the plate to deliver a RBI single to land St. Joseph's a 1-0 lead. Three batters later, a costly fielding error by Neenan at first base doubled the Golden Eagle advantage, followed by Jenna DeFina's RBI single to stretch the lead to three.

St. Joseph's put the game out of reach in the sixth with a Rivera RBI single to build a four-run advantage.

Baron registered her 18th-career complete-game effort in defeat for Old Westbury.

ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE (BROOKLYN) BEARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels Wednesday (Mar. 27) to Brooklyn for a Skyline Conference doubleheader against the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (5-6, 2-0 Skyline) at 3 p.m from Gil Hodges.  Panthers are 3-3 against St. Joseph's since the Bears joined the conference in 2016.
