@OW_Panthers Baseball splits Skyline twinbill with St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn)

Old Westbury travels Wednesday (Apr. 3) for a non-conference showdown against Manhattanville College

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball opened NCAA Division III Week Monday afternoon with a split in Skyline Conference home action versus the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (10-8-1, 3-5 Skyline).   St. Joseph's claimed victory with an 8-3 decision in the opener before Old Westbury solidified the series split with a 6-1 win from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  The Panthers (8-10-1, 5-3 Skyline) are now 13-3 all-time against the Bears.

Game 1: St. Joseph's 8, Old Westbury 3
St. Joseph's broke the scoring with four runs scored in the second inning off starter Brandon O'Brien (L, 0-1: 4.1 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 4 BB, 3 K).  With two outs and runners at the corners, Kevin Reyes (1-for-4, R, HR, 3 RBI, BB) launched one over the left field fence to plate home Joseph Langan (1-for-2, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB) and Michael Gonzalez (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI, BB) for the 3-0 lead.  Anthony Palermo (3-for-5, R, HR, RBI) followed by crushing a solo home run that proved to be the game-winning run.

The Bears added single runs in the third and fourth innings to build its lead to six (6-0).

Old Westbury entered the scoring column in the fourth inning as Nic Labiento (2-for-4, R, RBI) reached base off a fielder's choice to advance Peter Capel (2-for-4, R, 2B) home and make it a 5-1 game.

St. Joseph's tacked on two runs in the fifth stanza that would conclude O'Brien's outing.

After three scoreless innings, Old Westbury tested starter Andrew Watters (W, 4-1: 9 IP, 13 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K) with a two-run ninth.  Labiento singled through the right side before scoring off a throwing miscue by shortstop J.J. McLaughlin.  Brandon Wilson (3-for-5, RBI, 2B) slapped a two-out RBI double to score Mike Manetta before John Condon fouled out to settle the 8-3 final.

Condon doubled down the right field line in the eighth inning to extend his hitting streak to seven games.

Game 2: Old Westbury 6, St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) 1
Old Westbury jumped ahead scoring two runs in the second inning off starter Vincent Juliano (L, 1-1: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 BB, K).  Vinny Trovato (3-for-3, R, 2 RBI, SB) singled through the right side to score Capel (1-for-2, R, 2 RBI, BB) for the game's initial run and Shaun Kaminski for the game-winning run.

Old Westbury added two runs in the third and a single run in the fourth to make it a 5-0 game.  Capel extended his hitting streak to five games with a two-run third inning single to push Sean Paprocki (1-for-3, R, RBI) and Wilson across home plate to end Juliano's day.  Paprocki drove in Trovato in the fourth with a single through the right side on reliever Daniel Egan (3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 4 K).

St. Joseph's broke into the scoring column in the sixth inning as Palermo scored on a passed ball by Michael Borsch to make it a 5-1 game.

Kaminski earned his third walk of the game to lead off the sixth before moving into scoring position on his team-leading eighth stolen base of the season.  After advancing to third on Trovato's bunt single, Kaminski came across to score off a Borsch sacrifice flyout to settle the 6-1 final.

Panther starter Adam Heidenfelder (W, 1-0: 7 IP) fired five strikeouts (one walk) and scattered fifth and sixth inning singles to Chris Zinser (1-for-3) and Michael Ryan (1-for-3), respectively, en route to earning his third-career complete game win.

MANHATTANVILLE COLLEGE VALIANTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels Wednesday (Apr. 3) to Purchase, New York for a non-conference showdown against the Manhattanville College Valiants (9-8) at 3:30 p.m. from Manhattanville Field, part of NCAA Division III Week.  The Panthers will enter Wednesday's matchup 4-6 against the Valiants dating back to the 2006 campaign.
