Old Westbury hits the road on Tuesday (Apr. 16) for a non-conference showdown against Baruch College

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball dropped a 5-2 decision in the opener before claiming the 7-4 win in the rubber match Sunday against the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (22-9, 12-4 Skyline) in Skyline Conference action from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  The Panthers (15-13-1, 10-6 Skyline) are now 6-5 against the Mariners dating back to the 2012 campaign.

Game 1: USMMA 5, Old Westbury 2
Old Westbury broke the scoring with the game's initial run in the second inning on starter John Kelly Jr. (W, 3-1: 8 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K).  Peter Capel (2-for-4, R, 3B) crushed a leadoff triple before advancing 90 feet home off Joshua Cruz's (1-for-4, RBI) ground out to shortstop Colin Baker for the early 1-0 lead.

USMMA replied by putting two runs on the board in the third frame on starter Adam Heidenfelder (L, 2-1: 7 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K).  With runners on second and third, a costly fielding error by left fielder Cruz push Baker (2-for-4, R) across home plate for the game-tying run.  Jesse Reinebold (2-for-5, 2 R) scored off a Kyle Cunningham ground out to second baseman Brandon Wilson to make it a 2-1 game.

The Mariners capitalized on a two-out bases loaded fifth by adding three runs to their cause, including Alex Mesaros earning his second walk of the game to score Garrett Aichele (1-for-4, R) for the game-winning run.

Trailing 5-1, John Condon (1-for-4, HR, RBI) kept his hitting streak alive as he launched a solo blast over the right field fence in the sixth inning to settle the 5-2 final.

Panther relievers Jason Espinal (2 H) and Matt Bohenek each fanned one batter in one inning of work as Mariner reliever Cunningham (S, 8) tossed one inning of no-hit relief to lock down the save.

Game 2: Old Westbury 7, USMMA 4
USMMA struck first with two runs scored in the opening inning on starter Brandon O'Brien (W, 1-1: 6.1 IP, 10 H, 4 R, BB, 3 K).  Cunningham (2-for-3, R, RBI) singled to left center to round home Aichele (4-for-4, R, 3B) for the game's opening run. Cunningham later scored off Zac Skov (2-for-3, RBI) RBI single to double the Mariners advantage (2-0).

Old Westbury answered in the bottom frame with two runs on starter Joe Raab (L, 4-1: 9 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 3 K ).  Capel (1-for-3, RBI, 2B) delivered an RBI double to advance Wilson home to pull within one. Condon (2-for-3, 2 R), who extended his hitting streak to nine games two batters earlier of a single, took advantage of a passed ball by catcher Griffin Reddeck to score the equalizer (2-2).

Michael Borsch (1-for-3, 2 RBI, 2B) drove in Dom Kriegel and Drew Robertson (2-for-3, R, 2B) off a two-out double to right center in the fourth inning for the Panthers to take the 4-2 lead.

Old Westbury put together a three-run fifth on Raab and reliever Billy Todd (ND: 0.1 IP, R, BB) to build a five run cushion (7-2), highlighted by Mike Manetta scoring off Todd's wild pitch for the game-winning run.

The Mariners threatened O'Brien and reliever Joe Sarni (S, 2: 0.2 IP) to keep the seventh inning alive.  Joshua Costlow (1-for-3, R, 2B) doubled down the left field line to lead off the stanza and later scored off a Baker (1-for-3, R, RBI) single to slice the deficit to four.  Aichele then singled to left field to put runners at the corners and conclude O'Brien's outing.  Reinebold reached off a fielder's choice that scored Baker.  Sarni induced a Vincenzo Alteri fly out to settle the 7-4 final and secure his second save of the season.

BARUCH COLLEGE BEARCATS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels to Brooklyn, New York Tuesday (Apr. 16) for a non-conference showdown against the Baruch College Bearcats (11-13) at 3:30 p.m. from MCU Park.  The Panthers enter Tuesday's matchup with a 16-3-1 mark against the Bearcats dating back to the 2006 season.
