@OW_Panthers Baseball tops New Rochelle for Senior Day sweep

Old Westbury will close out the regular season Friday (Apr. 26) with a Skyline Conference road twinbill against Mount Saint Mary College

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury collected 5-0 and 7-6 non-conference wins Wednesday afternoon over the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels (3-26) on Senior Day from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  The Panthers (18-14-1) improve to a 3-0 all-time mark against the Blue Angels.

Prior to first pitch of game two, Old Westbury celebrated its five-member 2019 Baseball Senior Class consisting of John Condon (2018-19), Adam Heidenfelder (2017-19), Vinny Negri (2017-19), Christian Tessitore (2017-19) and Alipio Tiburcio (2018-19) for their dedication to Old Westbury Athletics.

Game 1: Old Westbury 5, New Rochelle 0
Old Westbury struck first with three runs scored in the opening inning on starter Justin Grullon (L, 1-3: 1 IP, 4 H, 3 R).  Mike Manetta (1-for-3, R, 3B) tripled down the right field line before advancing 90 feet off Brandon Wilson's (1-for-3, R, RBI, 2B) double for the game-winning run.  Two batters later, Wilson scored off a Peter Capel sacrifice fly out to double the advantage. Shaun Kaminski (2-for-3, R, RBI, 2B) followed with a RBI double to score Condon (1-for-3, R, 2B) for the three-run lead.

The Panthers tacked on two runs in the fourth inning on reliever Demetrius Robinson (2.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, ER, 2 K).  Kaminski reached base off an one-out single before rounding home off a throwing miscue by Robinson.  Jon Dastagirzada (1-for-2, RBI, BB) slapped a single to left center to push across Drew Robertson to settle the 5-0 final.

Panther starter Heidenfelder fired six strikeouts (one walk) and scattered first and fourth inning singles to Jacob Villareal (1-for-3) and Phillip Ramos (1-for-3), respectively, en route to his second-career complete game shutout.  Blue Angel reliever Jorge Vila Jr. fanned two batters (one walk) and allowed a sixth inning single to pinch hitter Dom Kriegel (1-for-1) in 2.1 innings of relief.

Game 2: Old Westbury 7, New Rochelle 6
The Panthers got to starter Kendall Lanier (ND: 2.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, BB) by putting three runs on the board in the first inning.  Manetta (2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, SB) kept his hitting streak alive to push it to 11 games with a bunt single to lead off the frame. Condon (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, 2B) extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a two-RBI double to left center to score Manetta and Wilson (1-for-3, R, RBI) for the game's initial runs.  Capel (1-for-4, RBI, 2B) followed with a run-scoring double to advance Condon home for the 3-0 advantage.

The Blue Angels replied with a four-run third inning on starter Brandon O'Brien (ND: 3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, BB, 4 K).  Villareal (2-for-4, 2 R, 2B) doubled to reach base and scored two batters later off a Edgardo Figueroa (1-for-3, RBI, SB) sacrifice ground out to break into the scoring column.  New Rochelle clubbed back-to-back RBI doubles to knot the game at three before Ransel Pinedo's (1-for-3, RBI) single drove in Samuel Zambrana Jr. (1-for-2, R, RBI, BB) to take the 4-3 lead.

New Rochelle added two insurance runs in the fourth on O'Brien and reliever Joe Sarni (3 IP, 3 H, R, BB, 3 K) to build the 6-3 lead.

Old Westbury scored single runs in the fifth and sixth inning to pull within one run (6-5) before using a two-run rally in the seventh on reliever John Burke III (L, 0-1: 4.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB) to settle the 7-6 final.  Kaminski (1-for-4, R) slapped a single to third base to open the seventh and followed by scoring the game-tying run off a miscue by first baseman Zambrana Jr.. With Cruz sitting at third base, Burke III intentionally loads up the bases by handing out walks to Robertson and Michael Borsch.  Sean Paprocki (2-for-3, RBI, SB) is then hit by Burke III's pitch for Cruz to score the game-winning run.

Panther reliever Matt Bohenek tossed one inning of no-hit relief to secure his second win of the season.

MOUNT SAINT MARY COLLEGE KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury concludes the regular season Friday (Apr. 26) in Newburgh, New York with a Skyline Conference doubleheader against the Mount Saint Mary College Knights (12-14, 6-8 Skyline) at 12 p.m. from MSMC Baseball/Softball Complex.  The Panthers enter with a 5-5 mark against the Knights dating back to the 2015 campaign.
