Baron’s homer leads @OW_Panthers Softball at Sarah Lawrence

Old Westbury will close out the regular season Sunday (Apr. 28) with a Skyline Conference road twinbill against Purchase College

BRONXVILLE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury softball dropped 4-3 and 8-0 Skyline Conference road decisions to the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (17-16, 7-9 Skyline) Saturday afternoon from Mary Levine Field in Bronxville, New York.  The Panthers (9-16, 2-12 Skyline) move to a 6-4 mark against the Gryphons dating back to the 2015 season.

Game 1: Sarah Lawrence 4, Old Westbury 3
Sarah Lawrence struck first in the opening inning scoring a single run on starter Nicole Baron (L, 7-11: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, BB, 3 K).  Bailey Nguyen (1-for-3, RBI) slapped a two-out single to right field to score Tiffany McBrayer (2-for-3, 2 R, 2B) for the game's initial run.

The Gryphons put together a three-run second highlighted by Karissa McAuley (1-for-2, 2 RBI) taking advantage of a two-out bases loaded situation with a two-RBI single to push across Mikayla Cunningham and McBrayer for the game-winning runs.

Old Westbury broke into the scoring column in the third inning with a Lillian Chiauzzi's sacrifice flyout  to plate home Ireland Normile to make it a 4-1 game.

The Panthers got to starter McAuley (W, 8-6: 4 H, 3, R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K) with a two-run sixth inning rally as Baron (1-for-3, R, HR, 2 RBI) clubbed her first-career home run to advance Johanna Metz (1-for-2, R, BB, 2 SB) and settle the 4-3 final.

Baron registered her 28th-career complete-game effort in defeat for Old Westbury.

Game 2 (6 Inn.): Sarah Lawrence 8, Old Westbury 0
The Gryphons broke the scoring with two runs scored on starter Normile (L, 0-1: 5.1 IP, 11 H, 8 R, 5 ER, BB).  A McAuley (1-for-2, 2 RBI) sacrifice flyout drove in McBrayer (1-for-3, 2 R, RBI, BB, SB) for the game-winning run, who opened the frame with a leadoff walk.  Baylie Pettit (2-for-3, 2 RBI) followed with a run-scoring single to double Sarah Lawrence's advantage.

Sarah Lawrence tacked on three runs in the second frame to build the 5-0 lead.

The Gryphons put the game out of reach scoring two runs in the fifth and a single run in the sixth to build an eight-run advantage.

Metz (1-for-2, BB, SB) and Baron (1-for-3) collected Old Westbury's two hits of the game with fourth and fifth inning singles, respectively, off starter Nguyen (W, 6-4: 6 IP, 2 H, BB, 16 K) before Sarah Lawrence proceeded to retire the next eight batters over the final two innings to secure the run rule shutout.

Normile posted her first-career complete-game effort in defeat for Old Westbury.

PURCHASE COLLEGE PANTHERS UP NEXT FOR OLD WESTBURY: Old Westbury travels to Purchase, New York to close out the regular season Sunday (Apr. 28) with a Skyline Conference doubleheader against the Purchase College Panthers (9-21, 4-10 Skyline) at 11 a.m. from Purchase College Field.  Old Westbury enters Sunday's matchup against Purchase with a 15-9 mark dating back to the 2006 campaign.
