@OW_Panthers Baseball takes two from Purchase

Old Westbury remains at home Tuesday (Apr. 9) for a non-conference showdown versus Baruch College

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball swept a Skyline Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon with 5-4 and 9-1 wins over the Purchase College Panthers (12-10, 3-5 Skyline) from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex to conclude NCAA Division III Week.  Old Westbury (13-10-1, 9-3 Skyline) improved its record to 24-5 against Purchase dating back to the 2006 campaign.

Game 1 (11 Inn.): Old Westbury 5, Purchase 4
After a scoreless four innings, Old Westbury broke the stalemate with a two-run fifth on starter CJ Owens (ND: 8.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, K).  Nic Labiento (2-for-4, RBI, 2B) smacked a single that found a gap through the right side to plate home Shaun Kaminski (2-for-5, R, 2-2B). Two batters later, Mike Manetta (2-for-5, RBI) hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Michael Borsch to double Old Westbury's advantage (2-0).

Purchase responded in the sixth frame with three runs scored on starter Brandon O'Brien (ND: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 BB, K).

John Fitzgerald (2-for-4, RBI, BB) delivered a two-out RBI single to right field in the ninth off reliever Joe Sarni (W, 2-1: 5.1 IP, 5 H, R, 4 K) to extend Purchase's lead to four (4-2).

In a two-out bases loaded ninth, Old Westbury capitalized off of wild pitch that advanced Vinny Trovato (1-for-2, R) home to cut the deficit to one (4-3).  Joshua Cruz then took advantage of a throwing miscue by catcher Jackson Hill to send the game to extra innings and conclude Owens' outing.

With the bases juiced, John Condon (1-for-5) clubbed a walk-off single off reliever Michael Laskowski (L, 0-2: 1.1 IP, 2 H, R, 2 BB) to settle the 5-4 final in 11 innings.

Game 2: Old Westbury 9, Purchase 1
Purchase struck first in the opening inning as Nick Lasala (1-for-2, RBI, 2B) used a one-out double to score Matthew Mulligan (1-for-3, R) for the game's initial run.

Old Westbury erupted with a five-run third inning on Fitzgerald (L, 4-1: 4 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 5 ER, BB). Brandon Wilson (1-for-3, 2 RBI) singled up the middle to drive in Sean Poprocki and Manetta for the game-winning runs.  Wilson later rounded home off a Peter Capel (1-for-3, R, HR, 2 RBI) two-run home run that cleared the right field fence.

Old Westbury would go on to score single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Jon Dastagirzada's (2-for-3, RBI, R) run-scoring single ended Fitzgerald's day in the fourth and Condon (1-for-3, RBI) slapped a fifth inning RBI double on reliever Alex Miller (2 IP, 4 H, R, K) to build a six run cushion (7-1).

Old Westbury tacked on two runs in the sixth inning to settle the 9-1 final.

Old Westbury starter Adam Heidenfelder (W, 2-0: 7 IP, R) fired a season-best seven strikeouts and scattered six hits en route to earning his fourth-career complete game win.

BARUCH COLLEGE BEARCATS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury continues its nine-game homestand Tuesday (Apr. 9) with a non-conference showdown against the Baruch College Bearcats (8-11) at 3:30 p.m. from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. The Panthers enter Tuesday's matchup with a 14-3-1 mark against Baruch since 2006.
