@OW_Panthers Softball tangles with Mount Saint Vincent on Senior Day

Old Westbury remains on campus Tuesday (Apr. 9) for its home finale in a non-conference doubleheader against Hunter College

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury softball dropped a Skyline Conference Senior Day Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer Day matchup to the College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (7-14, 4-2 Skyline) Sunday afternoon with 8-6 and 10-1 setbacks from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  The Panthers (9-12, 2-10 Skyline) are now 11-17 against the Dolphins dating back to the 2006 campaign.

Prior to opening pitch, Old Westbury celebrated its three-member 2019 Softball Senior Class consisting of Nicole Baron (2018-19), Jennifer Lobody (2019), Jessica Schwartz (2018-19) for their dedication to Old Westbury Athletics.

Game 1: Mount Saint Vincent 8, Old Westbury 6
Old Westbury struck first in the opening inning with two runs scored on starter Hannah Thompson (W, 4-5: 6 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K).  Johanna Metz (1-for-2, 2 R, RBI, BB, 3B) slapped a run-scoring triple to score Amanda Neenan (2-for-3, R, RBI, BB) for the game's initial run and then plated home off a throwing miscue by second baseman Alicia Blevins to double the Panthers' advantage (2-0).

Mount Saint Vincent responded in the second inning to slice the deficit to one (2-1) and then put together a five-run fourth inning to take the 6-2 lead.

In the fifth inning, Sophia Herrera (2-for-4, R, 2 RBI, BB) used a two-out RBI single to advance Breeze-Lyn Morita (3-for-3, 2 R, RBI, 2B, SB) for the game-winning run on Panther starter Baron (L, 7-8: 7 IP, 14 H, 8 R, 7 ER, BB, 4 K).

Trailing 8-3, Old Westbury tested reliever Kayla Pagano (0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, BB) with a three-run sixth.  Metz earned a leadoff walk before advancing home off a Baron RBI double. Samantha Arcese (1-for-3, RBI) followed with a single down the left field line to plate home Schwartz (1-for-4, R).   With two outs and runners on second and third, Lillian Chiauzzi's sacrifice ground out drove in Baron to settle the 8-6 final.

Game 2 (5 Inn.): Mount Saint Vincent 10, Old Westbury 1
Mount Saint Vincent jumped ahead with four runs scored in the first inning off starter Baron (L, 7-9: 5 IP, 14 H, 10 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, K).  Taylor Milata's (2-for-4, R, RBI, 2B) one-out RBI double to left field scored Katie Moos (2-for-4, R, RBI, 2B) for the game's opening run and then rounded home off a fielding miscue by right fielder Chiauzzi, for what proved to be the game-winning run.

The Dolphins added single runs in the second and third inning to extend the lead to six (6-0).

Old Westbury broke into the scoring column in the third frame as Mallory Moretti took advantage of throwing error by second baseman Blevins to make it a 6-1 game.

Mount Saint Vincent put the game out of reach with three runs in the fourth and one run fifth inning to build a nine-run advantage (10-1) and secure the run-rule victory.

Old Westbury threatened in the fifth inning, but were unable to capitalize on Dolphin starter Kimberly Medina (W, 2-0: 5 IP, 3 H, R, BB, 2 K) as the Panthers stranded two runners on base.

Baron registered her 26th-career complete game effort in defeat for Old Westbury.

HUNTER COLLEGE HAWKS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury remains on campus Tuesday (Apr. 9) for its home finale in a non-conference doubleheader against the Hunter College Hawks (8-7) at 3 p.m. from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  The Panthers enter Tuesday's matchup 5-7 against the Hawks dating back to the 2011 campaign.
