OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball put on a strong first-half showing to capture a 72-62 Skyline Conference win over the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (6-8, 2-3 Skyline) Saturday afternoon inside Clark Athletic Center. The win improves Old Westbury (9-6, 5-1 Skyline) to a 8-2 against the Bears dating back to the 2015-16 campaign.
Old Westbury proved to be the aggressor in the game's opening 10:59 by putting together a commanding 26-7 run, headlined by Pedro Marquez's 11 points. Chris Mikos finished a three-pint play at the 8:01 mark for St. Joseph's to make it a 16-point game, 26-10. 24 seconds later, Jonathan Jamieson laid in two to ignite a 8-2 Panther run and extend the lead to a game-high 22 points, 34-12, with 5:12 remaining. From 4:09 to 2:38, Mikos scored eight of the Bears' next 10 points to trim the deficit to 15 points (37-22) before the Panthers closed out the remaining 2:07 with a brief 5-2 spurt and sent the 42-24 game into the break.
Old Westbury maintained the double-digit lead for 19:09 of second-half play before Stephane Etheart's layup at 51 seconds pulled St. Joseph's within nine points, 71-62. Marquez sank a free-throw with 38 seconds left to settle the 72-62 final.
Marquez led all scorers with a season-high 27 points (8-of-13 FG, 5-of-8 3FG, 6-of-8 FT) to go along with six rebounds and four assists to lead Old Westbury to victory.
Justin Alleyne-Washington followed with 17 points (5-of-9 FG, 2-of-4 3FG, 5-of-6 FT), nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals while
Charles Wingate dished out a game-high seven assists.
Mikos finished with 19 points (6-of-9 FG, 1-of-1 3FG, 6-of-8 FT) and five rebounds while Frank Reali chipped in 15 points (7-of-9 FT) to pace St. Joseph's.
Old Westbury fired away at a rate of 51 percent (25-of-49) from the field, 40 percent (8-of-20) from three-point territory and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free-throw line. The Bears connected on 30.2 percent (19-of-63) from the floor, 26.9 percent (7-of-26) from beyond the arc and 73.9 percent (17-of-23) from the charity stripe. Old Westbury won the boards battle, 41-32, while St. Joseph's scored 20 points off 16 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury outplayed St. Joseph's in assists (20-12), blocks (3-1) and points in the paint (24-22). St. Joseph's held the edge in steals (11-5), bench points (24-11), fastbreak points (16-10) while scoring 30 points off 24 Panther miscues.
