Quartet of double-digit scorers pace Men’s Basketball against Purchase

Old Westbury remains on campus Wednesday (Feb. 5) for a Skyline Conference showdown versus Maritime College

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.comSUNY Old Westbury men's basketball dropped a 106-91 Skyline Conference home decision Saturday afternoon to the Purchase College Panthers (13-6, 8-2 Skyline) on Coaches Powering Forward for Autism Day inside Clark Athletic Center. Old Westbury (11-8, 7-3 Skyline) are now 7-3 against Purchase dating back to the 2014-15 campaign.

Prior to opening tip, the coaching staff of Bernard Tomlin (Old Westbury) and Kyle Martin (Purchase) wore the Autism Speaks puzzle piece pin as part of the NCAA Autism Awareness and Acceptance Weekend (Feb. 1-2) in supporting the 1 in 59 children on the autism spectrum (#AutismHoops).

After a back-and-forth battle for the advantage in the game's opening 14:16, Cameron Winston sank a pair of free-throws as part of Old Westbury's 10-0 run to claim the 44-34 lead with 2:58 left. Purchase responded with a brief 6-2 run started off Elijah Harris' freebie over the remaining 2:38 to trim the deficit to six points and send the 46-40 game into the break.

Purchase opened the second-half play by scoring eight-straight points to hold a one possession lead, 48-46, over Old Westbury with 18:25 left. During the span of 2:01, Purchase built a six-point lead (56-50) before Old Westbury pulled within two (56-54) after a pair of Pedro Marquez free-throws. Andre Peguero and Maxx Miller combined for 16 points as part of Purchase outscoring Old Westbury 31-17 from 16:05 to 5:51 to extend its lead to a game-high 16 points, 87-71. Old Westbury battled to trim Purchase's lead and got in as close as 11 off of Marquez's two freebies with 1:49 left before Jorge Perdomo's layup kickstarted a 6-2 spurt for Purchase to settle the 106-91 final.

Charles Wingate finished with a career-best 25 points (9-of-15 FG, 5-of-6 3FG) to go along with four steals to pace Old Westbury. Justin Alleyne-Washington followed with 21 points (7-of-15 FG) and two steals. Marquez chipped in with 19 points (7-of-9 FT and five assists while Pierrce Perry added 11 points (4-of-6 FG, 3-of-4 FT) and six rebounds off the bench.
 
Perdomo led all scorers with 28 points (10-of-16 FG, 4-of-9 3FG, 4-of-5 FT) in Purchase's triumph. Elijah Lott followed with 24 points (8-of-15 FG, 8-of-8 FT) and a game-high seven assists. Harris contributed 20 points (8-of-10 FG, 4-of-5 FT) and 12 rebounds while Miller poured in 17 points (6-of-11 FG, 5-of-6 FT). Peguero scored 12 points (6-of-7 FG) and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
In the end, Old Westbury shot 44.9 percent (31-of-69) from the field, 45.8 percent (11-of-24) from three-point territory and 72 percent (18-of-25) from the free-throw line.  Purchase connected on 57.1 percent (40-of-70) from the floor, 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from beyond the arc and 87.5 percent (21-of-24) from the charity stripe. Purchase won the boards battle, 47-26, scoring 16 second-chance points off 15 offensive rebounds. Old Westbury led the way in assists (14-13), steals (11-7) and bench points (19-5) while scoring 26 points off 20 Purchase miscues. Purchase held the edge in blocks (4-3), points in the paint (64-36) and fastbreak points (32-28).

Old Westbury remain on campus Wednesday (Feb. 5) for a Skyline Conference showdown against the Maritime College Privateers (9-10, 5-5 Skyline) at 6 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center. The Panthers will enter Wednesday's matchup 16-1 against Maritime dating back to the 2009-10 season.
