OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball closed out their home schedule Tuesday evening with a 78-56 Skyline Conference Play4Kay win over the Yeshiva University Maccabees (7-17, 4-15 Skyline) inside Clark Athletic Center. With one game left in the regular season, Old Westbury improves to a 10-14 overall mark and a 10-9 record in league play.
Prior to the opening tip, Old Westbury and Yeshiva wore Play4Kay t-shirts as part of honoring survivors in the fight against ALL cancers affecting women. All the proceeds from the shirts went to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
Micah Browne laid in two points 30 seconds into the opening quarter to kickstart a 6-0 run for Old Westbury. During the next 5:19, Yeshiva responded with a 16-6 run, 14 points put together by Tehilla Teigman, Jennie Mellman and Mahlia Leventhal, to claim the 16-12 lead heading into the second. Yuval Nitzan knocked down a jumper 10 seconds into the second stanza for the Maccabees' 18-12 advantage. At 9:17,
Ja'nya Flash's layup ignited an 11-5 Panther run to knot the game at 23 with 6:30 left. Yeshiva then used an 11-3 spurt from 6:19 to 2:42 to push its lead to a team-high eight points (34-26) before Old Westbury scored five-unanswered points to send the 34-31 game into the break.
16 seconds into the third quarter, Davida Warren finished a three-point play to kickstart a 15-0 Old Westbury run and regain the lead for good, 46-34, with 6:11 left. Jessie Orgel drained a three-pointer at the 5:14 mark to pull Yeshiva within nine, 48-39. The Panthers grew its lead to 13 (57-44) in the remaining 4:55 of the third capped by a Warren layup. Old Westbury remained in the driver's seat to start the fourth by outscoring Yeshiva 18-6 from 8:25 to 2:25 to build a game-high 25-point cushion, 75-50. Mellman and Orgel scored the Maccabees' final six points over the next 1:04 to trim the deficit to 19 points, 75-56, before Marva Dudley-Adams connected from deep with 16 seconds left to settle the 78-56 final.
Warren led all scorers with 22 points (10-of-20 FG), a career-high 25 rebounds (17 offensive) and two blocks to post her 38th-career double-double (18th of season) in Old Westbury's triumph. Browne followed with 20 points (7-of-14 FG) and a game-high seven assists while Flash chipped in 14 points (7-of-14 FG), 11 rebounds and three blocks to register her her sixth-career double-double.
Teigman finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and two steals to pace Yeshiva. Mellman followed with 11 points (5-of-10 FG) while Leventhal added 10 points (3-of-6 FG, 4-of-6 FT) and 18 rebounds.
In the end, Old Westbury shot 35.7 percent (30-of-84) from the field, 5.3 percent (1-of-19) from three-point territory and 58.6 percent (17-of-29) from the free-throw line. By comparison, Yeshiva connected on 30 percent (21-of-70) from the floor, 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from beyond the arc and 52.2 (12-of-23) from the charity stripe. Old Westbury won the boards battle, 68-45, while scoring 26 second-chance points off 34 offensive rebounds. The Panthers outplayed Yeshiva in assists (15-7), blocks (10-5), points in the paint (56-32) and bench points (14-12) while scoring 22 points off 24 Maccabee miscues. Yeshiva held the edge in steals (11-9) and fastbreak points (18-10).
