Baseball jumps ahead early to down Rutgers-Newark

Old Westbury returns to the diamond Saturday (Mar. 7) for a non-conference battle versus Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball captured a 4-1 non-conference road victory Thursday afternoon against the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders (3-6) from Weequahic Park in Newark, New Jersey. Claiming its first win on the season, the Panthers (1-1) improve to a 2-1 mark versus the Scarlet Raiders dating back to the 2011 season.

Peter Capel (3-for-5, 3 RBI) laced a first-inning single to center field off Scarlet Raider starter Marcus James (L, 0-1: 6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K) to score Mike Manetta (R, 3 BB) for Old Westbury's 1-0 lead. In a one-out bases loaded situation, Capel placed a RBI single to left field to advance Sean Paprocki (2-for-4, R) 90 feet in the fifth inning for the game-winning run. Shaun Kaminski (RBI, BB) followed by reaching on a fielder's choice to push across Brandon Wilson (1-for-4, 2 R) and build the Panthers' lead to three.

Rutgers-Newark broke into the scoring column in the sixth with one run scored on Panther starter Brandon O'Brien (W, 1-0: 6.0 IP, 4 H, R, 2 BB, 4 K). Adam Thompson (2-for-4, RBI, SB) singled to right center to plate Michael Streim (2-for-3, R, SB) home and conclude O'Brien's outing.

The Scarlet Raiders threatened Panther reliever Matt Bohenek (S, 1: 2.0 IP, 2 H, BB, K) in the eighth inning leaving two on base. Anthony Ricardo (1-for-2) slapped a leadoff single up the middle before Thompson singled to right center and advanced to second base on the throw. With runners on second and third, Bohenek induced two straight groundouts to get out of the jam.

Old Westbury tacked on an insurance run in the ninth inning as Wilson reached base off a fielding error by third basemen Jamir Ramos (1-for-4) and later scored off Capel's one-out single for the 4-1 advantage.

In the bottom frame of the ninth, Rutgers-Newark had runners on first and second base with Ricardo up at bat. With a 2-2 pitch count on the board, Bohenek struck out Ricardo to secure his first save on the season.
