Baseball tangles with Rutgers-Newark

Old Westbury travels to Hoboken, New Jersey Wednesday (Mar. 11) for a non-conference showdown against Stevens Institute of Technology

YAPHANK, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball suffered an 8-5 non-conference loss to the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders (4-6) Saturday afternoon from Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, New York. The setback moves the Panthers (1-2) to a 2-2 mark against the Scarlet Raiders dating back to the 2011 campaign.

In the first inning, Connor Clare (2-for-5, R, RBI, 2-2B) slapped a two-out double off Panther starter Patrick Quinn (ND: 4.0 IP, H, R, 5 BB, 6 K) to score Adam Thompson (2-for-3, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 2 HR, SB) for Rutgers-Newark early 1-0 lead .

Old Westbury responded quickly in the bottom frame with two runs scored off Scarlet Raider starter Michael Matusz (ND: 5.0 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB, 6 K). Mike Manetta's (2-for-5, R, RBI) leadoff single followed by Brandon Wilson's (4-for-4, R, 2 RBI, 2B, SB) single to left field put the Panthers in scoring position. A batter later, Manetta scored off of Peter Capel's sacrifice fly to tie the game at one (1-1). Wilson stole third and then took advantage off a throwing error by catcher Chris Suleski for Old Westbury's 2-1 lead.

The Panthers tacked on two runs as Drew Robertson (1-for-3, R, BB, 2B) reached on a ground-rule double to lead off the second inning. Three batters later, Manetta singled through the right side to round home Robertson before Wilson's RBI double scored Sean Paprocki (1-for-3, R) for the 4-1 advantage.

Rutgers-Newark worked to chip away at the deficit by putting together one run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth. Thompson homered over the right field fence on Panther reliever Joe Sarni (1.0 IP, H, R, 2 BB, 2 K) to make it a 4-2 game and conclude Sarni's outing. With Steven Tellerias (0.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, BB) on the mound in a one-out bases loaded sixth inning jam, Thompson induced a walk to advance Lisandro Ulerio (1-for-3, R, 2 BB) 90 feet to pull within one run (4-3). Armando Alvarez (2-for-3, R, 4 RBI, BB, HR) hit a two-run single on Panther reliever Joshua Cruz (L, 0-1: 2.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 5 K) to score Jamir Ramos (1-for-4, R, BB) and John Klimowich (1-for-5, R) as the Scarlet Raiders claimed its first lead of the afternoon, 5-4.

Old Westbury answered with one run score in the bottom frame of the sixth on Scarlet Raider reliever Michael Katims (W, 1-1: 4.0 IP, 3 H, R). Wilson's sacrifice fly pushed Michael Borsch (2-for-4, R) across home plate, after reaching off a leadoff single to right center, to knot the game at five (5-5).

In the eight inning with two-outs on the board, Thompson launched one over the right center field fence for the game-winning run before Alvarez crushed a two-run homer over the right field fence to settle the 8-5 final.

Panther reliever William Amendola fanned one batter in 1.1 innings of work.
