Cariddi selected as Skyline Conference's NCAA Woman of the Year Nominee

INDIANAPOLIS – Former SUNY Old Westbury student-athlete Amelia Cariddi (softball) has been selected as one of two Skyline Conference nominees for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, announced Wednesday (July 15) by league officials. Diamond Onomake, three-sport student-athlete of Mount Saint Mary College (cross country/indoor track and field/outdoor track and field), joins Cariddi as the other league's candidate for the award.

Rooted in Title IX and directed by the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics, the NCAA established the Woman of the Year award in 1991 to celebrate the achievements of women in intercollegiate athletics.

One of the most prestigious NCAA awards now entering its 30th year, the NCAA Woman of the Year award honors graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.

Cariddi, the Seaford, New York native, was one of a program-record 605 female student-athletes that have been nominated for the award. The nominees represent all three divisions, including 259 nominees from Division I, 126 from Division II and 220 from Division III. Nominees competed in 24 sports, with multi-sport student-athletes accounting for 128 of the nominees.

Conference offices will select up to two nominees each from their pool of member school nominees. All nominees who compete in a sport not sponsored by their school's primary conference, as well as associate conference nominees and independent nominees, will be considered by a selection committee. The NCAA announced Tuesday (Aug. 11) of the 605 school nominees, 161 college athletes have been named conference-level nominees for award. The nominees represent student-athletes from 21 different sports spanning all three NCAA divisions. Of those nominated, 59 nominees competed in Division I, 39 in Division II and 63 in Division III.

Then, the Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the Top 30 honorees, which include 10 women from each division from the conference-level nominees and will be announced in September. From there, the selection committee will determine the top three finalists from each division. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will select the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year from the nine finalists.

The Top 30 honorees will be celebrated and the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named this fall.

"I am truly honored to be selected as SUNY Old Westbury's and the Skyline Conference's nomination for the NCAA Woman of the Year," said Cariddi. "I have a tremendous respect and love for the game of softball and I am beyond grateful that my work on and off the field has been recognized."
