FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – SUNY Old Westbury softball (0-5, 0-5 Skyline) hosted a Skyline Conference doubleheader against the Mount Saint Mary College Knights (11-3, 9-2 Skyline) but fell 13-3 and 19-10, respectively on Wednesday evening.
Game 1 (5 Inn.): Mount Saint Mary 13, Old Westbury 3
The Knights broke the scoring ice in the opening inning as Samantha Bendig (2-for-4, 4 RBI, R) hit a single to left field off of Panther starter Panther starter
Christina Hassett (L, 0-4: 5 IP, 13 H, 13 R, 10 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) that brought home Laura Dentato (3-for-4, 4 RBI, 3 R).
After the Knights scored four more runs in the top of the second inning, the Panthers responded in the home half of the third as Hassett (1-for-2, RBI) hit a sacrifice fly to center field off of Knight starter Bridget Morris (W, 6-1: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 0 ER, BB, 5 K) that scored
Lillian Chiauzzi. The next hitter,
Gianna Ventiere hit a single that plated
Kristen Ulmer (2-for-3, R) to cut the deficit to three (5-2).
The Knights would go on to compile seven runs in the top of the fifth inning, highlighted by Bendig's two-run double to left center field, and would ultimately secure the 13-3 victory.
Game 2 (11 Inn.): Mount Saint Mary 19, Old Westbury 10
The Panthers started off strong in the bottom of the second inning as Ulmer (2-for-3, RBI, 2 R, BB) slapped a single to right field off of Knight starter Olivia Ferara (ND: 4 IP, 13 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) that brought home
Kimberly Basile and
Mallory Moretti (2-for-4, RBI, R, BB). The next hitter,
Johanna Metz (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI, R, 2 BB) smacked a line drive that sailed over Dentato's (3-for-7, 3 RBI, 3 R, BB) head in center field that rolled all the way to the fence which allowed Metz to register a two-run inside-the-park home run that gave Old Westbury a 4-0 edge.
The Knights responded in the road half of the third frame by registering seven runs that started with a double to right center field off of Panther starter Hassett (L, 0-5: 8 IP, 16 H, 16 R, 10 ER, 5 BB, 4 K) and was capped off on a single up the middle by Nicole Rosner (ND: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, K) that scored Lauren Farina.
Old Westbury countered in the bottom of the fourth as Hassett (3-for-4, 2 RBI, BB) smacked a double to right center field that scored Ulmer and
Sara Welti (2-for-4, RBI, R) to slash the deficit to one (7-6). The rally continued as Ventiere (2-for-6, RBI, R),
Mallory Moretti and Welti all hit RBI singles to conclude the five-run inning and gave the home team a 9-7 lead.
The Knights would come back and put up a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning including a solo home run by Bendig (3-for-5, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 3 R, 2 BB) that cleared the left field fence and was later followed by a single through the left side by Alicia Killeen (2-for-6, 3 RBI, R, BB) to knot the game at nine apiece to send the game into extras.
After scoreless eighth, ninth and 10th innings that were tossed by Morris (W, 7-1: 5 IP, H, R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) and Hassett, the Knights erupted in the 11th and drove in 10 runs that was highlighted by Bendig's second home run of the evening that brought in three.
Mount Saint Mary College would ultimately settle the 19-10 victory in a total of four hours and 45 minutes.
