FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – SUNY Old Westbury softball (0-7, 0-7 Skyline) hosted a Skyline Conference doubleheader against the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles (9-3, 7-3 Skyline) but fell 10-6 and 7-1, respectively.
Game 1: St. Joseph's (L.I.) 10, Old Westbury 6
In the opening inning, the Panthers wasted no time breaking the scoring ice as
Johanna Metz (1-for-3, 2 RBI) smacked a sacrifice fly to center field off of Golden Eagle starter Patricia McGloin (W, 4-2: 5.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 5 BB, 3 K) that brought home
Mallory Moretti (1-for-1, 2B, RBI, BB).
The Golden Eagles countered with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning including an RBI single up the middle by Lauren Crawford (3-for-5, 3 RBI, 2 R) and a run scoring double down the left field line by Lindsay Ness (2-for-3, 2B, RBI, R) both off of Panther starter
Christina Hassett (L, 0-6: 7 IP, CG, 13 H, 10 R, 8 ER, 4 BB, 2 K) give the visitors a 2-1 edge.
St. Joseph's (L.I.) erupted in the road half of the fourth frame as they compiled seven runs that were highlighted by a two-run triple down the right field line by McGloin and a two-run double to right center field by Crawford to help extend their lead to eight (9-1).
In the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers strung together a trio of runs as Metz capitalized while the bases were juiced to bring home
Sara Welti (1-for-2, 2 R, BB, SB). The next hitter, Hassett reached base on a fielder's choice that scored
Melanie Vespa (2-for-3, RBI, R). The scoring in the inning concluded when
Gianna Ventiere scored on a wild pitch to slash the deficit to five (9-4).
The Golden Eagles would ultimately hang on and secure the 10-6 victory.
Game 2: St. Joseph's (L.I.) 7, Old Westbury 1
In the road half of the first inning, the Golden Eagles struck first as Paige Csikortos (3-for-4, 3 RBI) slapped a single to right field off of Panther starter Hassett (L, 0-7: 7 IP, CG, 13 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) that gave St. Joseph's (L.I.) a 1-0 advantage.
The Panthers quickly responded with a run of their own as Hassett hit a sacrifice fly to right field off of Golden Eagle starter Julia Ruocchio (W, 3-1: 7 IP, CG, 2 H, R, ER, 2 BB, 4 K) that scored Moretti to knot the game at one apiece.
In the top of the third, Csikortos hit a double down the left field line that brought home Ness (3-for-4, 2 R) and Crawford (1-for-3, RBI, 2 R) to put the Golden Eagles in the lead 3-1.
The Golden Eagles would later compile three runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth to ultimately settle the 7-1 final.
