KINGS POINT, N.Y. – No. 2 SUNY Old Westbury baseball (13-5, 9-3 Skyline) took down the fourth-seeded Maritime College Privateers (12-12, 8-6 Skyline) 14-4 from Raymond J. Bartoszek Field in Kings Point, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon.With the victory, the Panthers earned a spot in the 2021 Skyline Conference Baseball Championship finals against the top-seeded United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (15-3, 12-3 Skyline) tomorrow, Sunday (May 9) at 12 p.m.
The Panthers broke the scoring ice in the road half of the opening inning as
Shaun Kaminski (1-for-3,, RBI, 3 R, 2 BB) knocked a sacrifice fly to center field off of Privateer starter Niko Concha (L, 1-2: 3.1 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 2 K).
Drew Robertson (1-for-3, HR, RBI, 3 R, 2 BB) smacked a leadoff solo home run that cleared the left field fence off of Concha to start the second inning to give the Panthers a two-run advantage (2-0).
In the top of the fourth frame, the Panthers extended their lead as
Charlie Eisele (1-for-2, 2 RBI) knocked a base hit through the left side that scored
Sean Paprocki to make it a 3-0 game. Later in the inning,
Brandon Wilson (4-for-4, 3 RBI, 3B, 2 2B, SB) smacked a two-RBI single to left field to extend their lead to five (5-0).
In the top of the fifth, the Panthers added a pair of runs to their lead on a ground out by Eisele that allowed Fajardo to score and was followed by an RBI double to left field by
Nic Labiento (2-for-4, 2 RBI, R, BB) that scored Robertson to make it a 7-0 game.
Eddie Guzman (W, 2-1: 6 IP, 4 H, R, ER, 4 BB, 8 K) was locked in on the mound for the Panthers as he silenced the Privateers and struck out eight while allowing only one earned run, four hits with zero extra-base hits.
The Panthers ultimately added seven more runs, including a solo home run by
Oscar Fajardo (1-for-5, HR, RBI, 3 R) en route to the convincing 10-run victory (14-4).
