FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – SUNY Old Westbury softball (3-13, 3-12 Skyline) hosted a Skyline Conference doubleheader against the Purchase College Panthers (1-24, 1-19 Skyline) and won 3-0 and 8-0 (5 Inn.), respectively, on Sunday. With the victories, the Panthers have now won three of their last four games. During the intermission of the doubleheader, SUNY Old Westbury held its Senior Day ceremony and honored four seniors who will be graduating for their commitment and dedication to Old Westbury athletics.
Game 1: Old Westbury 3, Purchase 0
Throughout the first three innings, Old Westbury starter
Christina Hassett (W, 2-12: 7 IP, CG, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, BB, 8 K) and Purchase starter Kelly Agostini (L, 1-23: 6 IP, CG, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K) were locked in a pitcher's duel as neither one allowed a run.
Old Westbury broke the scoring ice in the bottom of the fourth as Hassett (1-for-2, HR, RBI, R, BB) smacked a solo home run off of Agostini that cleared the left field fence to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.
In the home half of the fifth, Old Westbury added another run as
Mallory Moretti (2-for-3, RBI) slapped a single up the middle that drove home
Angelina Chaves to double their lead (2-0).
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Old Westbury concluded the scoring on an infield single by
Lillian Chiauzzi that scored
Gianna Ventiere to make it a 3-0 game.
Hassett was stellar in the circle as she fired three innings (third, fourth and sixth) in which she retired the visitors in order and threw a career-high eight strikeouts en route to the 3-0 shutout victory.
Game 2 (5 Inn.): Old Westbury 8, Purchase 0
Old Westbury's
Johanna Metz (1-for-3, RBI, 2 R) kicked off a three-run first inning with a double to left field off of Purchase starter Agostini (L, 1-24: 4.1 IP, CG, 8 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) that brought home
Kristen Ulmer (1-for-2, 2 R, BB). The next batter, Hassett reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop that allowed Metz to touch home for the second run. Later in the inning,
Jessica Tucci (1-for-2, RBI) slapped a run-scoring single to right center that allowed Hassett to score and make it 3-0.
In the bottom fourth Old Westbury scored another trio of runs and capitalized on a pair of errors by Purchase that allowed Old Westbury to score two more and extended Old Westbury's lead to six (6-0).
In the home half of the fifth both
Kimberly Basile (3-for-3, RBI, 2 R) and Chiauzzi hit back-to-back RBI singles up the middle, respectively, to settle the 8-0 run-rule victory.
Hassett (W, 3-12: 5 IP, CG, H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) shut down the Purchase offense for a second-straight game as she threw a one-hitter and struck out five in five innings of work en route to the win.
