The Old Westbury baseball team dropped two games against Skidmore College in Sunday's doubleheader. The Panthers fall to 0-5 on the season, and have two more non-conference doubleheaders before opening up Skyline play on March 15th against Yeshiva.
Game One: Old Westbury 3, Skidmore 13
After a scoreless first inning on both sides, Skidmore scored first with a seven run second inning. The Thoroughbreds notched five hits along with four walks, capped off with a bases clearing triple from Max Mello (2-for-5, 6 RBI).
Old Westbury answered back with two runs in the bottom of the second when
Jamal Ritter (1-for-4, 2 RBI) singled to right field to bring home
Paul DePaulis (1-for-3) and
Charlie Eisele (2-for-2).
The Panthers added another run in the bottom of the third, before Skidmore's Mello hit a three-run home run in the top of the fourth for a 10-3 lead. Skidmore scored a run in each of the last three innings, and held Old Westbury to just one hit through the last four innings to finish off the game 13-3.
Justin Aviles took the loss on the mound, allowing seven earned runs on six hits and five walks.
Game Two: Old Westbury 8, Skidmore 19
Skidmore scored first as three straight singles and a hit by pitch brought home the first run of the game. Cameron Pedemonti (2-for-5, RBI) then hit a ground ball back at Old Westbury pitcher
Joseph Lubrano (3.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 4 ER), but an errant throw allowed two more runs to cross the plate.
Jamal Ritter (1-for-3) led off the bottom of the first with a double to right field, followed by a single through the left side from
Drew Robertson (1-for-4), and a ground out by
Jacob Ford (2-for-4, 2 RBI) to score Ritter.
Both teams went scoreless through the second inning, before the Panthers plated another in the bottom of the third to cut Skidmore's lead down to 3-2. Skidmore responded with three runs in the top of the 4th. After three consecutive walks given up by Lubrano, Max Mello (2-for-2, 3 RBI) singled to right center to score two for the visitors before Pedemonti brought home the third run of the inning.
Skidmore and Old Westbury each scored two runs on two hits in the fifth inning. Skidmore then had their second seven-run inning of the day in the top of the sixth as a result of six hits and three Old Westbury errors.
In the bottom of the seventh, Old Westbury's
Oscar Fajardo (1-for-3, 2 RBI) hit a solo homerun to left field, A walk by
Jacob Taormina (1-for-3) and back-to-back doubles from
Wilmer Cuevas (2-for-4, RBI) andÂ
Marcello Arrigo (1-for-1, RBI) scored the final two runs of the game for Old Westbury.
