Baseball Splits Skyline Doubleheader at Purchase

The Old Westbury baseball team moves to 5-14 overall, and 3-5 in the Skyline Conference with a split doubleheader at Purchase College on Saturday afternoon.

Game One: Old Westbury 11, Purchase 0
Old Westbury got on the scoreboard first with three runs in the first inning. Jaime Barrios (4-for-5, 2 RBI, 3 R) doubled to left field and Jacob Ford (2-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 R) was hit by a pitch to put two on for the Panthers. Oscar Fajardo (1-for-3, 3 RBI, R) hit a three-run homerun on the first pitch to give Old Westbury the early lead. That is Fajardo's fourth homerun of the season, and is tied for first in the Skyline.

Old Westbury added two runs in each of the next three innings. Ford doubled in the second inning to score Barrios and Paul DePaulis (1-for-2, 2 RBI, 2 R). DePaulis doubled in the third inning to score Jacob Taormina (1-for-3, R) and Drew Robertson (1-for-2, R). In the fourth inning, Ford hit an RBI single to score Barrios, and Ford later scored on a fielding error by the third baseman.

Patrick Quinn earned his second win of the season on the mound for Old Westbury. He allowed just two hits and one walk through seven innings pitched and struck out 10 batters, matching his career-high. Quinn moves to second in the Skyline in strikeouts with 34 on the season.

Game Two: Old Westbury 2, Purchase 3
Purchase scored first in game two of the doubleheader. Christian Homa (2-for-5, 2 R) singled and stole second, before advancing to third base on a grounder to the shortstop. Homa later scored off a single by Mason Compton (2-for-4, RBI).

Old Westbury answered back with a run in the top of the second inning. Drew Robertson (2-for-4, R) singled to right field, and Shaun Kaminski (1-for-3, RBI) tripled to left field to score Robertson.

Purchase scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the 2-1 lead. Trevor Zanderzuk (1-for-3) was reached on an error by the shortsop to load the bases with two outs. The next batter Matt Dragotto (0-for-3, RBI) was hit by a pitch to score the unearned run. Purchase scored an insurance run for a 3-1 lead off three singles in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Old Westbury scored a run in the top of the ninth inning, but fell short of making the comeback. Oscar Fajardo (1-for-4) and Robertson hit back-to-back singles to put two on for the Panthers with one out. Aaron Castillo and Lou Peluso entered as pinch runners for Fajardo and Robertson. Jacob Taormina (2-for-4, RBI) hit a single up the middle to score Castillo and advanced to second base on the throw home. With runners on second and third, Purchase intentionally walked Kaminski to load the bases, and were successful in getting Charlie Eisele to ground into a double play to end the game.

Justin Aviles took the loss on the mound for Old Westbury, scattering nine hits and allowing two runs, one earned, through 5.2 innings pitched. Aviles struck out four batters in the effort.
