Men's Basketball Taken Down by Christopher Newport in the Opening Day of the Captains Shootout

Newport News, Va. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team was defeated in the opening day of the Captains Shootout by the Christopher Newport University Captains by a final score of 102-56.
 
The Panthers could not seem to get things going on either the offensive or defensive side of the ball. Despite their efforts and every player who dressed recording minutes, the team could not do enough to keep up with the Captains. 
 
Old Westbury lost control of this game early as they found themselves down eight points, just two minutes into the game. The first Panther points of the night would come off a layup from Jordan Johnson-Rader. The Panthers tried to pull out of the deficit, but at the midway point in the first half, they trailed by 15 points. 
 
The Capitans ended the first half of play possessing their largest lead of the half, leading the Panthers by a score of 49-25. 
 
In the first half, the Panthers could not hit shots from behind the arc. Aiddan Smith converted the lone three-pointer, as OW only hit one of five three-point shots. The team was out rebounded throughout the opening half, 29-14. 
 
As the second half of action got underway, the Panthers fought hard to make up ground over the Capitans but saw no luck and were met with more of what they saw earlier in the game. The Capitans continued to grow their lead and ended the game with one of the largest leads of the night, ahead by 46 points. The Panthers fell to the Capitans by a final score of 102-56. 
 
Throughout the night, the leading scorer for the Panthers was Amadi Lee-Kane. He ended the night with 12 points, six rebounds, one assist, two steals and a block. Jamari Williams was the team's leading rebounder. Williams finished the game with ten points, seven boards, an assist, a steal and a block. 
 
The Capitans' leading scorer in this one was Toa Hollenbeck who led the game with 20 points. He also had four rebounds and two assists. As for the game's leading rebounder, it was Jake Latta who finished with ten boards.
 
As a team, the Panthers shot 19-61 on the night and finished with a shooting percentage of 31 from the floor. The team converted only two three-point shots in the entire game and shot 22 percent from behind the arc. The Panthers committed a costly 16 turnovers, allowing the Capitans to score 34 points off of turnovers.  
 
The Panthers were outplayed and overtaken by the Capitans in the opening day of the Captians Shootout. Christopher Newport will advance to the championship game of the tournament and take on Stevenson University.

The Panthers will look to pick up a win in their final game of the year as they will face off against the New Jersey City University Knights in the tournament's consolation game, tomorrow at 3pm.
