Women's Basketball Falls to Medgar Evers in Their Final Game of the Year

OLD WESTBURY, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team was defeated by the Medgar Evers College Cougars by a final score of 55-46 on Friday.

The Panthers ended 2023 on a sour note, as the team was unable to overcome the strong defensive performance of the Cougars.

The game got off to a fast start for Medgar Evers as they found themselves up 9-0 just about two and a half minutes into the game. The Panthers would then strike back with six points unanswered closing the gap to just three points around the midway mark in the first quarter. The Cougars would connect on a couple of key shots and ended the quarter ahead by a score of 15-9.

As the second quarter got underway, the Cougars hit the first five buckets, growing their lead to twelve and maintaining it through just over the midway point in the half. Medgar Evers ended the first half of play, ahead by 11 points by a score of 34-23.

The third quarter would feature much of the same, with the Cougars holding onto their lead for the entire period. Medgar Evers possessed their largest lead of the game, with a 15-point margin over OW.

In the fourth quarter, things got interesting for both sides. Around the midway mark of the quarter, the game got heated and unfortunately, some players on both sides were disqualified from the remainder of the contest. The Panthers were awarded four technical free throws which helped them close the gap to just seven points.

On the following Panther possession, the team cut their deficit to just five points thanks to a layup from Phalan Smith. Despite their efforts in the end and a clutch three-pointer from the Cougars, the Panthers fell short in this one. Medgar Evers took the game by a final score of 55-46.

Despite the team's struggles, Sierra Rowe had a strong game. Rowe ended the day with 12 points, three rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Kasiobi Okenwa led the Panthers in rebounding as she had 11 boards on the day, as well as nine points.

As for the Cougars, Sheily Quezada led the game in scoring. Quezada had 20 points, 15 rebounds, two steals and six blocks.

Throughout the game, the Panthers connected on 7 of 19 three-point attempts, shooting just under 37 percent from behind the arc and just under 25 percent from the floor.

All in all, the Panthers will look to regroup as the team will play their first game of the new year on the road. OW will travel to take on Manhattanville College for a Skyline Conference matchup on Tuesday, January 2. Tip-off is set for 6pm.
