OLD WESTBURY, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team suffered another tough loss against Baruch College by a final score of 65-36.
The game was close in the first few minutes with both teams trading buckets back and forth. The teams remained locked up but Baruch began their run near the end of the first quarter after Mia Costello hit two key three pointers.
The Bearcats would hold onto the lead and continued to convert their shots. Throughout the game, Baruch shot 32 percent from field goal range and 33 percent from three-point range.
Baruch's leading scorer was Mia Costello who averages nearly 30 points per game on the season. Tonight, Costello scored 22 points and recorded eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Another impressive Bearcat showing came from Elissa Leung. She recorded 18 points, three assists and two rebounds. Leung was also crucial to the Bearcats' defense with six steals.
The Panthers' shooting struggles played a noticeable part in the outcome of the game tonight. On the game, the Panthers shot the ball 24 percent from the floor and 22 percent from behind the arc. Despite the shooting lull for Old Westbury, there were still some strong individual performances.
Phalan Smith continued to lead the team as she scored 10 points and a game high 18 rebounds individually.
Another noteworthy Panther performance came from
Tyela Davidson. She scored nine points and recorded three boards, and an assist. Defensively, Davidson had a good night as she tallied three steals.
Allysha Thomas grabbed seven rebounds throughout the night for Old Westbury and had an assist.
While the shots could not fall, the defense still game a valiant effort for the Panthers. As a team, the Panthers finished the night with seven blocks and six steals. The Panthers held the Bearcats to only 65 points which is the lowest point total scored by an opponent in a loss on the season.
To note, the Bearcats dominated the Panthers of of points from turnovers. The Bearcats scored 34 points as a team off of Panthers' mistakes while Old Westbury only had nine points off of turnovers.
The Panthers will regroup and prepare to make their first roach trip of the season to take on fellow Skyline Conference member, Sarah Lawrence College on Wednesday, December 6. Tip-off for that game is at 7pm.
