Baseball Sweeps John Jay

The Old Westbury baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader at John Jay on Friday afternoon by a score of 2-0 in game one, and 12-2 in game two.

Game One: Old Westbury 2, John Jay 0

How it Happened

Both teams went scoreless through the first three innings. In the top of the fourth inning with two outs, John Dell'Olio was hit by a pitch to reach base for the Panthers. Dell'Olio then stole second and third base before Oscar Fajardo singled to left center to score the first run of the game. In the top of the sixth inning, Dell'Olio was hit by a pitch for the second time, stole second base, and again scored on a single by Fajardo to make the score 2-0. John Jay went hitless through the last four innings to close out the game.

  • John Dell'Olio scored two runs for the Panthers, with three stolen bases after reaching base twice from a hit by pitch.

Game Two: Old Westbury 12, John Jay 2

How it Happened

Old Westbury opened the game with four runs in the first inning. Jamal Ritter led off the game with a single to right field, advanced to second after a failed pickoff, and then stole third base. Jacob Taormina walked and stole second base to put two on with John Dell'Olio at the plate. Dell'Olio singled through the right side to score both runs, and later stole second and third base. The next two batters walked for the Panthers and Dell'Olio scored on a wild pitch. Jaime Barrios grounded on to first base to score Fajardo for the fourth run of the inning.

Justin Aviles struck out six batters in the first two innings, before the Panthers scored two more in the top of the third inning. Dominic Felicetti singled to the pitcher and advanced to second on a throwing error. Troy Emmanuel singled through the left side to move Felicetti to third; Emmanuel then stole second base. Felicetti scored on a wild pitch and Emmanuel advanced to third. The next batter struck out swinging, but a dropped third strike allowed Emmanuel to cross the plate to put Old Westbury ahead 6-0.

John Jay scored a run in each of the third and fourth innings, but Old Westbury scored six more in the fifth. Felicetti reach on a hit by pitch, and later scored on a throwing error. With the bases loaded, Old Westbury had two hit by pitches and to walks for four runs to score. In his second at-bat of the inning, Felicetti hit a sacrifice fly to score Papageorge.

  • Frank Whitenack and Greg Vivenzio each pitched an inning of relief. Whitenack had two strikeouts, and Vivenzio had one.
