Men's Basketball Starts Off Strong, But a Tough Second Half Leads to Defeat Against Manhattanville on Wednesday Night

OLD WESTBURY, NY - The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team was overcome by the Valiants of Manhattanville College on Wednesday night by a final score of 72-61. 
 
The Panthers started the game off strong but were slowed down near the end of the first half and could not find a way to recover in the end. 
 
The game got off to a favorable start for the Panthers as they connected on back-to-back baskets. Both teams traded baskets for a while with neither team really jumping out in front. 
 
Around the midway point of the first half, the Panthers put together a seven-point scoring run consisting of a mid-range jumper from Amadi Lee-Kane as well as a jumper and three-point shot from Jamari Williams. 
 
The lead changed hands a couple more times as the first half moved on, but as the game came to a break, the Valiants were ahead by three with a score of 36-33. 
 
As a team, the Panthers played particularly well in the first half. Jamari Williams led the team in the first half with 18 points. As a group, the Panthers shot the ball 50 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from three. On the other hand, Manhattanville shot 41 percent from the floor and 36 percent from three, cashing in on 8-22 three-point shots. 
 
The Valiants came out hot in the second half as they found themselves ahead by eight points, just four minutes in. That said, OW did not give up without a fight. Manhattanville's largest lead of the game was 16 points, and it came with 6:42 to play in the contest. 
 
In the final minutes, the Panthers were able to bring themselves to within single-digits thanks to two free-throws from Tim Park. Despite their efforts, the Panthers could not complete the comeback. Manhattanville defeated the Panthers by a final score of 72-61. 
 
Throughout the second half, the Panthers began to struggle both offensively and defensively. As a team, OW shot the ball 29 percent from the floor in the second half, finishing with a shooting percentage of 38.6 on the night, compared to the Valliant's 41.7 percent. Old Westbury went 0-8 from downtown in the second half while Manhattanville hit 13 three-pointers throughout the game.
 
The leading scorer for the Panthers was Jamari Williams who finished the night with 21 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and three steals. This was Williams' first double-double on the season. Amadi Lee-Kane finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal. Another top performer for the Panthers was Jordan Johnson-Rader. He finished the game with 11 points, eight boards, two assists, a block and a steal. 
 
As for the Valiants, their top scorer was Tommy Lotito. He finished the game with 18 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Andrew Saint-Louis had a strong game, recording 16 points, two rebounds and a steal. One more key performer for Manhattanville was Tony Hastings. He amassed 12 points, and a steal. 
 
Despite their efforts and strong start, the Panthers could not close out and finish with the same intensity. The team will turn its attention to their next game as they prepare for yet again another Skyline Conference battle. 
 
The Panthers will next play on the road on Saturday, January 20 at 1pm as they will travel to face off against the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
