Men's Basketball Defeated as Late Efforts Fail Against the United States Merchant Marine Academy

KINGS POINT, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team was taken down by the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners as their late efforts were to no avail. The final score was 61-57.

The game got off to a strong start for the Panthers as the team got up by five points within the first three minutes of the game. From there, the two sides traded baskets and kept things close. The Panthers found themselves with their largest lead of the night, ahead by eight points, with just under seven minutes to go in the first half as Tim Park nailed a three-pointer.

As the first half moved on, the Panthers were able to maintain their lead despite USMMA answering back with some points. The Panthers went into the break ahead by four points with a score of 31-27.

Over the last couple of games, the Panthers have been able to hold a lead into the break but the true test comes within the final minutes of each game.

The second half is where things got interesting for both sides. The Panthers came out of the break with some momentum still on their side. The two sides stayed pretty close in points for most of the first half of the final half of play.

The Mariners found themselves with a six-point advantage with 10 minutes remaining after they connected on a big three-pointer. USMMA continued to build their lead and grow it to 11 points.

The Panthers were able to chip away at the lead and bring it to a game in the final minutes. The last 90 seconds of the contest were the most exciting. The Panthers were able to bring it to even after Amadi Lee-Kane connected on a big-time three-point shot. Unfortunately on the ensuing possession, Lee-Kane turned the ball over.

The Mariners took the lead again with just under 10 seconds remaining. The Panthers were unable to overcome the successful free-throw shooting of the Mariners and lost in a heartbreaking fashion to the Mariners of the United States Merchant Marine Academy by a final score of 61-57.

Amadi Lee-Kane led the Panthers in scoring, finishing the game with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists, four steals and a block. Jordan Johnson-Rader scored 10 points and had two rebounds and two assists. Jamari Williams finished with eight points and five boards (all on the defensive end) and two steals.

As for the Mariners, their leading scorer was Drew Zalescik who finished the day with 23 points, 15 rebounds, two assists and a steal. Isaac Vencel scored 11 points and recorded three rebounds.

The Panthers shot the ball 41 percent from the floor in this one and 21 percent from behind the arc. As a team. The Mariners shot just over 42 percent from the floor and 23 percent from three. The Panthers actually won in the turnover battle as they only committed 10 compared to USMMA's 19.

Despite their efforts down the stretch, the Panthers were unsuccessful in picking up their first win of the season in a close Skyline Conference matchup.

The Panthers will regroup and prepare for their next contest which will take place on the road as they are set to take on Maritime College on Wednesday, January 24 at 7pm.
