Men's Basketball Overtaken by Maritime College on Wednesday Night

THROGGS NECK, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team was overcome by the Privateers of Maritime College on Wednesday night by a final score of 79-51. 
 
The Panthers struggles continued in this one as the team had no answer for their Skyline Conference opponent. 
 
The game got off to a favorable start for Maritime. The Privateers scored the first six points of the contest and took an early double-digit lead with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. The first Panther points came from Jamari Williams who hit a layup off an assist from Jordan Johnson-Rader
 
While the Privateers continued to look and add points, the Panthers showed some resistance and fight to cut the deficit. As the midway point in the half rolled by, the Panthers began a small scoring run that would cut their deficit to five points thanks to a basket from Emmanuel Lemba
 
As the remainder of the period moved on, the Panthers defense began to struggle again, and the Privateers build up another double-digit lead. At the close of the first half, the Privateers led the Panthers by a score of 35-24. 
 
The second half featured a lot of the same with Maritime in control, but the Panthers did not go down easily. Despite Maritime's offense thriving, the Panthers continued to battle back. With 13 minutes remaining the game, Maritime was ahead by 21 points. 
 
At the seven-minute mark, the Panthers cut the gap to 15 points as Tim Park connected on a mid-range jumper. Although the Panthers closed it up slightly, the Privateers ended up walking away with a comfortable margin. The Privateers defeated the Panthers by a final score od 79-51. 
 
The Panthers' leading scorer was Michael Obi, who also had a double-double. Obi played one of his best games of the season in this one, finishing with 13 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Jamari Williams recorded nine points, three rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal on the night. Amadi Lee-Kane finished the game with six points, four rebounds, and four assists. 
 
For Maritime, the game's leading scorer was Jake Murphy who recorded 24 points, and four assists. Another key contributor was Jovan Germain. He finished the night with 13 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Tyler Anderson also had a strong game for the Privateers, finishing with six points, seven rebounds and a steal. 
 
Old Westbury shot the ball 37 percent from the floor, 36 percent from behind-the-arc, and 58 percent from the free-throw line. Maritime finished the game better in each category shooting 50 percent from the floor, and 46 percent from three-point range.
 
The Panthers will regroup and shift their focus to the next matchup. The Panthers return home as they are set to host their fellow Skyline Conference opponent, Yeshiva University, on Sunday, January 28 at 12pm in the Clark Center Gymnasium.
