Men’s Soccer Falls Short in Close Finish Against St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn on Wednesday

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's soccer team was unsuccessful on Wednesday afternoon as the team was defeated by the Bears of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn by a final score of 1-0.
 
The Panthers now sit at 4-7-1 overall on the year and hold a conference record of 1-6.
 
The game was a defensive battle throughout the first half as neither side would find the back of the net.
 
The Bears' offense found more opportunities as they took a total of 15 shots throughout the first half and had eight corner kicks. For the Panthers, the team was only able to attempt six shots and found themselves kicking from the corner only once.
 
Both sides would enter halftime in a 0-0 tie.
 
In the second half it was the defenses once again that shined. Old Westbury improved their shooting however they still only managed to get off seven shots. Throughout the match, the Panthers only had five on-target shots.
 
Just under the 73-minute mark, the Bears would strike and score the only goal of the day thanks to Pablo Mejia.
 
The Panthers could not respond and would fall to the Bears by a 1-0 final score.
 
For Old Westbury, Tiago Tirado, Roobens Celine, Christian Mathurin, Ryan Persaud and Mauricio Mejia each took a shot on net.
 
In goal, Andy Chacho got the start. Chacho faced 31 shots with 13 of them being on-target. Chacho would finish the day with 12 saves and allowed the lone goal.
 
Next up, the Panthers will continue conference play with a battle against Maritime on Saturday, October 12 at 3 PM. Following that, the Panthers return home for a non-conference match against SUNY Delhi on Wednesday, October 16 at 3:30 PM.
