Women’s Basketball Defeated in Home Opener Against Cedar Crest on Saturday

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team played in their first game at home on Saturday against the Falcons of Cedar Crest. The final score was 68-49 in favor of the Falcons.
 
Old Westbury now falls to 0-3 overall on the season.
 
The game got off to a strong start for the Falcons who found an early 6-0 lead. OW closed the gap down the stretch in the first quarter thanks to a collection of layups by Jailah Pineda and Maya Kama. The score at the end of the first quarter was 18-14 in favor of Cedar Crest.
 
In the second quarter, OW was outscored by eight points as their offense began to struggle against the Cedar Crest offense. The Panthers shot just 47 percent from the floor in the second quarter. At the end of the first half, the Panthers trailed, 36-24.
 
Coming out of the halftime break, the Panthers allowed a few runs by the Falcon offense. Half way through the third quarter, the Falcons found themselves ahead by 24 points.  At the end of the quarter, Old Westbury trailed by 17 points with a score of 53-36 in favor of Cedar Crest.


In the final period of play, the Panthers kept things close as they scored 13 points compared to the Falcons' 15. In the fourth quarter, Old Westbury shot the ball 22 percent from the floor.
 
The Panthers shot the ball 33 percent from the floor, 14 percent from three-point range, and 33 percent from the free-throw line.
 
Jailah Pineda led the way for the Panthers in scoring as she recorded 16 points, six rebounds, eight assists, and six steals. Malaura Olivier had a strong afternoon as she finished with a double-double consisting of 15 points and 12 rebounds. Maya Kama also had a strong game as she finished with 14 points, one rebound, and two steals.
 
Next up, the Panthers will remain at home and begin conference play. OW will play host to Sarah Lawrence on Wednesday, November 20 at 7 PM. The game will take place in the Clark Center Gymnasium.
