Women’s Basketball Defeated by Sarah Lawrence in Skyline Conference Opener on Wednesday

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team was defeated by the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College on Wednesday night. The final score was 73-57 in favor of Sarah Lawrence. 
 
The Panthers now fall to 0-4 overall on the season and hold a Skyline Conference record of 0-1. 
 
The game got off to a fast start for Sarah Lawrence as the connected on a few strong possessions. The Gryphons' largest lead of the first period was nine points with just about 30 seconds to play. The Panthers were able to close the gap to just two possessions thanks to a big corner three from Malaura Olivier. SLC led OW 18-12 at the end of the first quarter. 
 
The Panthers were in control in the second quarter as Rianelly Estrella opened the scoring with a three-pointer of her own to cut it to a one possession deficit. Olivier came up big again as she evened the score at 25-25 with a little over four minutes to play in the half as she hit another three-pointer. 
 
The Panthers went into halftime with the lead and a score of 33-30. 
 
In the third period, Sarah Lawrence regained the momentum. The Gryphons found an eight-point led with just over six minutes remaining. The Panthers responded fast with a layup from Olivier and a three-pointer from Maya Kama to make it a three-point deficit. SLC connected on several ensuing possessions and found an eight-point lead once again. Sarah Lawrence led 52-47 going into the final period of play. 
 
In the fourth quarter, the Panthers struggled to find their groove on both sides of the court. Midway through the period, Sarah Lawrence would lead by 20. The Panthers managed to close the gap slightly. Ultimately, the Panthers fell to the Gryphons by a final score of 73-57. 
 
As a team, the Panthers shot the ball 28 percent from the floor, 11 percent from three-point range and 68 percent from the free-throw line. OW committed 14 turnovers but forced 20. The Panthers were able to score 17 points off turnovers and 24 points in the paint.
 
Malaura Olivier led the way for the Panthers with a dominant night. Olivier finished with a double-double, 19 points, 11 rebounds, one block and one steal. Maya Kama finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal. Jailah Pineda also had an impressive showing as she recorded 12 points, three rebounds, nine assists and three steals. Brianne Belizaire led the team in rebounding as she recorded 14 boards and five points. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will hit the road and continue Skyline Conference play. The Panthers will travel to take on USMMA on Saturday, November 23 at 12 PM.
