Men’s Basketball Falls Short in Hard Fought Battle Against John Jay on Sunday

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team was unsuccessful on Sunday afternoon against the Bearcats of John Jay College. The Panthers fell by a final score of 87-77.

Old Westbury now falls to 2-1 on the campaign. The team will open conference play later this month.

The Panthers found themselves ahead early, by a big margin. Old Westbury held a 12-2 lead just under four minutes into the game thanks to a pair of three-pointers from Kellen Leake and Zion Williams.

John Jay started to come back but the OW offense kept pushing forward. The Bearcats ultimately made it a one score game after cashing in on a deep three-pointer.

The Bearcats took the lead in the first half for the first time with just about five minutes to play.

The two sides went into halftime separated by just four points with the Bearcats in the lead, 40-36.

In the second half, the Panthers offense seemed to struggle as shots wouldn't fall. At just about the midway point in the second half, the Bloodhounds possessed a 17-point advantage.

Despite trading baskets, the Panthers could not really chip away at the John Jay lead. With just over five minutes remaining in the game, the Panthers trailed by 19.

Old Westbury was able to make it a single digit deficit thanks to a pair of free-throws from Amadi Lee-Kane. The Panthers were trailing by nine points with only 1:16 remaining on the scoreboard.

OW could not close the gap further and fell short to John Jay by a final score of 87-77.

For the Panthers, throughout the game, the team shot the ball 39 percent from the floor, 40 percent from three-point range and 84 percent from the free-throw line. The Panthers committed 19 turnovers as a team. Which led to 23 points off of turnovers for the Bloodhounds,

Amadi Lee-Kane led Old Westbury in scoring as he finished the game with 17 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Kellen Leake went 2-2 from behind the arc and finished the game with 10 points, six rebounds, one block and one steal. Jaden Flemming had 15 points as well as six rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Next up, the Panthers will continue their non-conference slate and play host to Salve Regina on Saturday, November 23. That game is scheduled to start at 1 PM and will take place in the Clark Center Gymnasium.
