OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team was victorious over the Ospreys of Salve Regina University on Saturday by a final score of 77-74.
The Panthers now move to 3-1 on the season.
The two sides went back and forth, trading baskets for several opening possessions. The Ospreys found the first two-possession lead of the game with just over 11 minutes to play in the first half with a score of 20-16.
Old Westbury quickly flipped the score as they went on a scoring run to find a 10-point lead with just over five minutes to go in the half. Amadi Lee-Kane hit a big-time three-pointer to cap the run.
The Panthers continued to pour on the points as Giuliano Camporini hit from deep and Lee-Kane scored another three. OW possessed a 14-point lead with just over two minutes to go in the half.
Salve Regina slowed the run and managed to comeback to cut the deficit to just seven points at the half. The Panthers held a 40-33 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Panthers came out fresh as Joel Ofori connected on a fast break layup followed by a three from Kellen Leake. The Panthers found themselves up by 12 yet again.
Neither side made any drastic movement on the scoreboard until the Osprey's scoring run. With a little under four minutes, the Ospreys took the lead. From there, the Panthers responded with a big layup from Ofori and a game-sealing three from Leake.
The Panthers held on to defeat the Ospreys by a final score of 77-74.
As a team, the Panthers shot the ball 45 percent from the floor, 50 percent from behind-the-arc and 78 percent from the free-throw line. The Panthers committed 15 turnovers but forced 16, scoring 19 points off of turnovers.
For the Panthers, Kellen Leake led the team in scoring. Leake finished the game with 22 points, one board and two steals. Joel Ofori finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. Amadi Lee-Kane played well as he recorded 16 points, two rebounds, four assists, one block and three steals.
Next up, the Panthers return to action following the Thanksgiving break. On December 4, the Panthers will play host to Brooklyn College in the Clark Center Gymnasium at 6 PM.
