Women's Basketball Falls to Keystone in Season Opener on Friday Night

LA PLUME, PA – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team opened their season on the road on Friday night against the Giants of Keystone College. The Panthers were defeated by the Giants by a final score of 89-44.
 
The Panthers found themselves down 8-0 just three minutes into the game. The first points for OW came thanks to a three-pointer from Rianelly Estrella. From there, Maya Kama and Jailah Pineda connected on jump shots to contribute to the scoring for the Panthers. At the close of the first quarter, the Panthers found themselves down 22-7.
 
In the second quarter, the Panthers once again struggled to stop the Giants' scoring. Estrella connected on another shot from behind-the-arc to help make an effort to close the gap. Despite the offense showing some flashes, the Panthers struggled defensively. The Giants held a 48-16 lead at halftime.
 
The Panthers capitalized off Giants' fouls in the third quarter as Shanya Hicks connected on a total of three free-throws, one from Kama and Pineda hit three.
 
The Giants entered the final period of play with a 67-32 lead. Old Westbury scored another 12 points as their defensive struggles continued. The Giants would walk away with the victory and a final score of 89-44.
 
For the Panthers, Jailah Pineda led the team in scoring. Pineda finished with 16 points, two rebounds and one assist. Maya Kama played well as she recorded 11 points, two rebounds, three steals, and one assist. Rianelly Estrella also had three steals in addition to eight points, and nine rebounds. Malaura Olivier led the team in rebounding as she finished with 11 boards and four points.
 
As a team, OW shot 25 percent from the floor and 28 percent from three-point range. The Panthers hit 16 out of 22 free-throws.
 
Next up, the Panthers will remain on the road as the team will travel to Montclair, New Jersey take on Montclair State University on Wednesday, November 13 at 6 PM.
