Men’s Basketball Falls in Close Finish to St. Joseph-Long Island to Open Conference Play

The SUNY Old Westbury men’s basketball team was defeated by the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph’s Long Island on Saturday by a final score of 67-62.

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team was defeated by the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's Long Island on Saturday by a final score of 67-62. 
 
The Panthers now fall to 4-3 overall on the season and sit at 0-1 in conference play.
 
Old Westbury got off to a fast start as Jamari Williams and Kellen Leake opened the scoring in the first minute. A three-pointer from Guiliano Camporini put the Panthers ahead by seven-points just four minutes into the game. 
 
The Panthers' lead grew to 12 as Leake cashed in on a three-pointer to make the score 16-4 in favor of OW.
 
The Golden Eagles would go on a run to close the gap to just one point with just about nine minutes to go in the first half.  SJLI took the lead with 6:37 left in the first half after a three-pointer from Ryan McNeely. 


From there, the two sides went back-and-forth. Old Westbury managed to grab the late lead in the first half thanks to a jumper from Michael Obi and a late shot from Chris Smith. The Panthers went into halftime with the lead by a score of 33-30. 
 
Coming out of the break, the Panthers regained their offensive control. The Panthers found themselves up by 12 thanks to a series of key shots including a three from Camporini, a fastbreak floater from Amadi Lee-Kane and a three-pointer from Leake. 
 
The Golden Eagles responded with a run of their own as they closed the gap to just one with seven minutes to play. 
 
St. Joseph's-Long Island regained control of the lead with a little over three minutes to play after a layup down low from AJ Esposito.
 
The Golden Eagles hit a big-time three-pointer just under the two-minute mark that put them up by seven points.
 
Despite making it a one possession game with 39 seconds remaining, the Panthers were unable to stop the Golden Eagles and complete the comeback. 
 
The Golden Eagles walked away with the victory by a final score of 67-62. 
 
For the Panthers, the team shot the ball 36 percent from the floor, 25 percent from three-point range and 68 percent from the foul line. The team committed a total of 12 turnovers compared to SJLI's 15. 
 
Kellen Leake led the Panthers in scoring as he finished with 19 points, five rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Amadi Lee-Kane also played well as he had nine points, six boards, one assist, one block and two steals. Michael Obi shined off the bench as he finished with nine points and seven rebounds. Obi went 1-3 from behind-the-arc. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will prepare to face off against Medgar Evers College on Saturday, December 28 at 1 PM. That game will be a part of the Medgar Evers Tournament and the Panthers will play again on Sunday, December 29 dependent on their finish on Saturday.
