Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Falls to Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday

NEWBURGH. N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team came up short against the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 64-59.

In the end, the Panthers came up short and could not overcome the late push of the Knights. Foul troubles set the Panthers back as the game came down to the wire.

The game got off to a start in favor of the knights as they cashed in on the first two baskets of the night. Chris Smith put one through the net off a mid-range jumper to get things going for the Panthers.

Just about three minutes into the game, the Knights opened up the scoring and found themselves out in front and ahead by 10 points thanks to a three-pointer, a pair of free-throws and a jumper in the paint.

The Panthers responded quickly as Jamari Williams scored two back-to-back baskets, one in the paint and one from behind-the-arc. Williams helped close the Panthers deficit to just four points with 15 minutes to go in the first half.

The Knights then began to go on another scoring run. They would soon find themselves ahead by 10 points yet again. This time, it was a combined effort for OW as C. Smith, and Amadi Lee-Kane scored field goals and Williams had a strong block on the defensive side of the ball.

With just under four minutes remaining in the first half, the Panthers trailed by 10 points. The Panthers scored on three consecutive possessions thanks to Lee-Kane's old-fashioned three-point play, and a layup from Jordan Johnson-Rader. Old Westbury went into halftime trailing by six points and the Knights were out in front, 34-28.

The Panthers offense came out strong in the second half. The team was able to cut their deficit to just four points. The Knights responded with a three-pointer of their own to go up by seven.  For the next several minutes the lead stayed with the Knights but the Panthers made valiant efforts to close the gap.

After the Knights had the lead by 11 points at one point in the half, the Panthers brought things to within just one point after C. Smith scored three-points the old-fashioned way and Williams nailed a big-time three-point shot. Williams was fouled on the shot, and drained the free-throw attempt.

With the game now even, on the following possession, C. Smith was fouled and went 2-2 from the line to put the Panthers up by two points with just over two minutes remaining.

The Knights were fouled and tied the game at the free-throw line. With just about 35-second to go, the Knights were fouled again and went 2-2 from the line to give them a two-point advantage. The Panthers late offensive plans failed as Lee-Kane could not hit the shot out of the timeout. The Knights would hold on and defeat the Panthers by a final score of 64-59.

Despite the final score, several Panthers had strong games. Jamari Williams led the team in scoring yet again. Williams finished the day with 20 points, seven rebounds, one block and a steal. Amadi Lee-Kane finished the day with 16 points, eight boards, and an assist. Chris Smith scored 14 points and recorded four rebounds, and a steal.

For the Knights, Connor Cyran led in scoring. Cyran finished with 21 points, and five rebounds. Jayden Figueroa recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. In addition, he finished with three assists and two blocks. Elijah Barnett finished the day with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists.

When comparing the two teams, the Panthers shot the ball 36 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from behind-the-arc. The Knights shot just one percent better than the Panthers with a field goal percentage of 37 percent and 25 percent from behind-the-arc.

In the end, the Panthers foul troubles helped push the Knights over the edge and give them the inevitable victory. The team will shift their focus towards their next matchup which will take place on Monday, Feb. 12. The Panthers will welcome the Mariners of the United States Merchant Marine Academy for a Skyline Conference battle at 7:30 pm. In addition, OW will be honoring their senior student-athletes on Monday night.
