Baseball Drops Season Opener on the Road Against Kean University

UNION, N.J. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team could not get things going as the program opened the season on the road on Friday afternoon against the Cougars of Kean University. The Panthers fell to the Cougars in nine innings by a final score of 15-0.

As the Panthers came to bat first, the first hit of the year was recorded by Jamie Barrios as he hit a single to right center. From there, the Panthers could not capitalize and would leave Barrios stranded on base.

Old Westbury's rookie James Sill got the start and took the mound in what would be his first collegiate action. Unfortunately, the Cougars took advantage of the Panthers' mistakes of the inning and would score five runs on five hits. Old Westbury was charged with two errors in the bottom of the first inning, helping to put the Cougars up 5-0.

In the top of the second inning, the Panthers could not drive home a run, but Division I transfer Rob Manetta recorded his first hit in green and white as he singled to left center field.

Frank Whitenack entered the game in relief in the bottom of the third inning. Despite the change in pitching, the Cougars offense continued to flourish. Kean increased their lead as the game headed to the fourth inning, 9-0.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Cougars really opened things up. Lou Pizzielo entered the game on the mound for OW. The Cougars scored three runs thanks to their catcher, CJ Tomalavage's home run blast to left center that drove in three runs. Kean now led 12-0.

Kenneth Dow replaced Louis Pizzielo in the bottom of the fifth inning. Dow allowed two hits but held the Cougars scoreless.

The pitching carousel continued as Justin Aramini replaced Dow to start the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Panthers were walked three times in the top of the seventh inning. That being said, OW could not find ways to drive in those runners, stranding all three men on base as the side was retired.

Kyle Gaertner would pitch the bottom of the seventh inning for the Panthers. Gaertner allowed three runs on four hits.

In the top of the eighth inning, Jacob Taormina doubled down the left field line but would later be picked off on second base. In the top of the ninth, James Sill, who moved to the DH slot, would single to left field. The Panthers could not drive in Sill and would be held scoreless by the Cougars as they emerged victorious by a final score of 15-0.

The Panthers recorded a total of four hits on the day with Taormina, Manetta, Barrios and Sill all picking up their first hits of the 2024 campaign.

Old Westbury showcased seven different pitchers throughout the opener with Sill being the only one to throw for multiple innings. Sill struck out two batters while walking only one. He allowed eight runs on seven hits. Gaertner struck out two batters after facing seven. Manetta who moved from catcher to pitcher recorded the most strikeouts with three after only facing three batters.

The winning pitcher for the Cougars was Nolan Rowan who went five innings. Nolan faced 18 batters and finished the day with seven strikeouts, only allowing four hits.

Old Westbury will travel home and regroup for their next matchup. The Panthers will open their season at home as they get set to play in a pair of doubleheaders against Union College on March 2 and 3. The opening game on March 2 will begin at 12pm.
