Women's Basketball Closes the Season With a Loss to the University of Mount Saint Vincent

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team closed the 2023-24 season with a loss on the road to the University of Mount Saint Vincent. The final score was 81-32. 
 
The Panthers faced an up-hill bathe throughout the game as the Dolphins offense flourished. The Panthers struggled to get things going offensively.
 
The Dolphins shined in the first quarter as they got out to a quick multi-possession lead with just under five minutes to go in the first quarter. Sierra Rowe hit a jumper for the Panthers to close the gap to just three points.  
 
Mount Saint Vincent would score on three straight possessions to close out the first quarter and go up by nine points with a score of 16-7. 
 
As the second quarter progressed, the Dolphins continued to walk away with the lead. The Dolphins soon found themselves with a 19-point advantage with six and a half minutes still to play in the first half. 
 
The Panthers offense struggled to connect on shots and the team could not close the gap by much. The Dolphins entered halftime ahead by 28 points with a lead of 42-14. 
 
Going into the third quarter, Mount Saint Vincent had one of their top scoring quarters. The Dolphins put up 21 points compared to the Panthers' 12 points. The Dolphins maintained their comfortable lead going into the final period of play and led 63-26. 
 
The Dolphins continued to walk away with this one as the fourth quarter progressed. With several reserves in the game for both sides, the Dolphins still outscored the Panthers by 12 points in the fourth. The Dolphins defeated the Panthers by a final score of 81-32. 
 
For Old Westbury, Phalan Smith led the team in scoring. Smith finished the game with eight points, seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. Kasiobi Okenwa finished the game with six points, three rebounds, three blocks and a steal. Tyela Davidson recorded five points, three rebounds, one block and three steals. 
 
As a team, the Panthers shot the ball 25 percent from the floor and 11 percent from three-point range throughout the game. 
 
The University of Mount Saint Vincent was led in scoring by Kira Villegas. She finished the game with 24 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Villegas also had a strong defensive game with five steals. Another top performer for the Dolphins was Morgan Jackson who finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and a steal. 
 
Throughout the game, the Dolphins shot the ball 52 percent from the floor and 40 percent from behind-the-arc. 
 
This loss concludes the Panthers 2023-24 campaign. The Panthers finished the season with an overall record of 3-21 and a conference record of 2-18. The team will field several newcomers next season with a lot of optimism and excitement to come.
