Men’s Basketball Wins in Overtime Over St. Joseph’s University-Brooklyn on Wednesday Night

OLD WESTBURY, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team picked up their first win of the season in a thrilling finish against the Bears of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn on Wednesday night by a final score of 76-74. 
 
This game was filled with excitement from start-to-finish and ultimately required extra time to decide the winner. Over the course of the game, the lead changed hands 10 times. 
 
The Panthers scored the first points of the night as Emmanuel Lemba cashed in on a mid-range jump shot. From there, the Bears put together some strong possessions on the offensive side of the ball and would soon find themselves with a six-point lead. 
 
As the game approached the mid-point in the first half, the Bears led the Panthers by double-digits courtesy of the Bears' Chris Tracy connecting on a big-time three-pointer. From there both sides traded baskets for some time. 
 
With two minutes left in the first half, the Panthers still trailed by double-digits. The Panthers managed to close the gap slightly thanks to a three-pointer in the corner from Michael Obi
 
Going into halftime, the Panthers trailed the Bears by seven with a score of 38-31. 
 
The second half was filled with excitement for both teams. The Bears offense came out just as strong and they made it challenging for OW to close the gap. Amadi Lee-Kane drained a three to make it a two-possession game with 17 minutes left in regulation. 
 
Around seven minutes into the half, Jamari Williams went 2-2 from the free-throw line and on the following possession Chris Smith drove into the paint for a layup that would hand the Panthers the lead once again. 
 
For the next several minutes, both the Panthers and the Bears remained locked up, within reach for both teams. 
 
In the final minute of regulation, Obi went 1-1 from the free-throw line. After Williams hit a huge free-throw, the Panthers and the Bears went to overtime.
 
In overtime, both teams went at it and the lead changed hands many times. With just under three-minutes to play, the Panthers began to pull away thanks to a jumper in the paint from C. Smith. 
 
Despite having the lead, the Panthers still fought to the end, and connected on several big-time free-throws. Johnson-Rader found Aiddan Smith wide open down the court and the Panthers went up by two points. 
 
As A. Smith went 1-1 from the free-throw line, the Bears could not compile a play in the end. The Panthers protected the den and defeated the Bears in overtime by a final score of 76-74.
 
For the Panthers, Jamari Williams led the way and scored 21 points. Williams also had nine rebounds, four assists, one block and a steal. Chris Smith had one his more impressive games of the year. C. Smith finished the night with 18 points, and eight rebounds. Jordan Johnson-Rader recorded 13 points, seven boards, three assists and two steals. Michael Obi was the leading rebounder for the Panthers, finishing with 10 boards, and six rebounds. 
 
Throughout the game, the Panthers shot the ball just under 40 percent from the floor, 25 percent from three-point range, and 61 percent from the free-throw line. 
 
The Bears were led in scoring by Evan Sirakis. He finished the game with 19 points, two boards, and six assists. James Mojica scored 12 points, four rebounds, one assist and a steal. Stephan Direny scored 11 points, six rebounds, one block and three steals. 

The Bears shot the ball 35 percent from the floor, 28 percent from behind-the-arc, and 71 percent from the free-throw line. 
 
Despite the victory, the Panthers lost in the turnover column as they finished the night with 18 turnovers compared to the Bears' 16. 
 
All in all, this was a massive victory for the Panthers as they picked-up their first win of the year. The team will prepare to take on Mount Saint Mary College on the road on Saturday, February 10 at 2pm. The Panthers advance to 1-21 on the year.
