Softball Dominates in First Game of the 2024 Season Against Brooklyn

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team was dominant in their first doubleheader of the season. The Panthers won both games against the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College 12-2 and 13-3, respectively.

Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (12)- Brooklyn College (2)

The Panthers got off to a hot start, putting up 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The rally was led by Natalie Intrieri who doubled up the middle. Alaina Reilly's single would drive in the first run from Intrieri. Ashley Pierce who made her first start with the Panthers recorded a double in her first OW at-bat. 

Hillary Bennett hit a triple that would score two runs. Jess Tucci would score a run after Gianna DiLillo hit a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. The Panthers would socre four more runs in the bottom half of the first inning. 

The Panthers piled on another run in the bottom of the third inning thanks to Juliana Vasquez who scored on a wild pitch. 

The Panthers would walk away and secure their first victory of the 2024 season with a 12-2 win over Brooklyn College. 

In the stats column, Natalie Intrieri finished with two hits including two doubles. She also had a stolen base and two runs. Hillary Bennet finished with a triple one run and one RBI. Madison Danin had a strong outing after amassing two hits and two RBIs in three at-bats. 

The winning pitcher was Julia Pastrana who threw four strong innings allowing only three hits, and one run. Pastrana recorded three strikeouts. 

Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (13)- Brooklyn College (3)

The Panthers were just as strong offensively in the late game. The team put up five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Pierce and Morgan Albright each singled while Bennett notched her second triple of the day. 

OW was able to score some more runs as a result of errors made by Brooklyn. 

Pierce had strong day at the plate, finishing with two hits and two RBIs. Jenna Gaspa started in the second game and recorded three runs in three at-bats, drawing two RBIs. Bennett finished with another triple as well as an RBI and run. 

Layla Ramos had a strong outing on the mound as she notched her first win on the season. Ramos pitched four innings allowing three hits, and three runs. She struck out four batters.

All in all, it was a strong first outing for the Panthers. They picked up their first two wins of the year and advance to 2-0 on the young season. Next up, the Panthers will remain at home and play host to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College on Thursday, March 12. The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 1 PM at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
