Softball Picks Up Another Two Wins on Thursday Afternoon Against John Jay

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team picked up another two wins on Thursday afternoon against the Bloodhounds of John Jay College. The Panthers defeated the Bloodhounds 3-2 and 5-2.

Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (3) – John Jay (2)

John Jay got things going first in the scoring column, driving home two runs in the top of the third inning after hitting a triple, scoring two runners.

The Panthers did not record their first hit until the bottom of the third inning when Angelina Fernandez opened the inning with a double to left center field. Amanda Varela would pinch run for Fernandez and managed to score on a passed ball, driving in the first run for the Panthers.

The Bloodhounds held their 2-1 lead until the bottom of the fifth inning. Alaina Reilly reached first on a fielder's choice. Gianna Ventiere entered the game as a pinch runner and would score after Madison Danin drilled a single down the right field line.

Both sides were tied up heading into the sixth inning. With Julia Pastrana in control on the mound for OW, the team had the opportunity to go ahead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning, Gianna DiLillo got on base with a slap hit single up the middle. She managed to steal second base. Natalie Intrieri then singled allowing DiLillo to move to third. On the next at-bat, both Intrieri and DiLillo stole bases, allowing DiLillo to tack on another run handing the Panthers the lead.

The Panthers were able to hold on and close it out in the top of the seventh inning. The Panthers defeated the Bloodhounds and won the first half of the doubleheader, 3-2.

Natalie Intrieri finished the game with three hits, and a stolen base. Madison Danin continued her strong offensive performance with two hits and an RBI. Angelina Fernandez went 1-2, with a double.

On the mound, Julia Pastrana notched her second win of the season. She finished with three strikeouts after facing all 28 batters for John Jay. Pastrana allowed only two runs on six hits.

Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (5)- John Jay (2)

In the second game of the day, the Panthers got things going quick. Ashley Pierce singled through the left side allowing Intrieri to score, giving OW their first run of the second game. Two at-bats later, Taylor Murphy drilled a single up the middle, allowing Reilly to score from third base. The Panthers exited the first inning with a 2-0 lead.

In the second inning, Reilly reached on an error, allowing DiLillo to score from third base, giving the Panthers another run.

John Jay recorded their first run of the game in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly driving in a runner from third.

With the score 3-1 in favor of the Panthers, Jenna Gaspa would hit a single and advance to second base. This allowed Tylyn LeSane who pinch ran to score.

The Bloodhounds added another run in the top of the fourth.

Going into the fifth inning, the Panthers held the lead, 4-2. Juliana Vasquez hit into an infield fly situation. This allowed Gaspa to advance and Danin to score from third base.

The Panthers managed to hold on and defeat the Bloodhounds in the late going, 5-2. The Panthers advance to 4-0 on the young season.

In the second game, Alaina Reilly recorded two hits in four at-bats as well as a walk and a run. Madison Danin recorded another two hits and a run. Gianna DiLillo went 1-1 with a single and a run scored.

On the mound, Taylor Murphy got the start. Murphy struck out two batters. In relief, Layla  Ramos finished with two strikeouts and allowed no runs and only one hit.

All in all, it was a great day for the Panthers. The team will head into their Florida Spring Break Trip undefeated. The Panthers will play a series of non-conference games in Florida at THE Spring Games. Upon return to Old Westbury, the team will play host to Hunter College for a non-conference doubleheader on April 1 at 4 PM.
