Baseball Defeated by Plattsburgh in the Opening Game of the Series on Tuesday

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team was defeated by the Cardinals of SUNY Plattsburgh on Tuesday by a final score of 14-12. The two teams will play another pair of games tomorrow afternoon.

The Panthers found themselves playing from behind early. By the end of the fourth inning, the Panthers were trailing 7-0. The Panthers scored their first runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Cayden Ysidro crossed home plate thanks to the Cardinals walking in a run.

Old Westbury went on a big run later on in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Cardinals pulled their starter from the game. The Panthers managed to draw in four more runs to move the score to 8-5 after five innings.

The Panthers tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 8-7.

With the game within reach, the Cardinals forced OW to make another pitching change in the top of the seventh inning. The Cardinals scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning, moving the score to 11-7.

The Panthers were within reach until the top of the ninth inning when the Cardinals went on another run to score three more runs making it a 14-7 ballgame in favor of Plattsburgh.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Panthers rallied to bring the game to within two runs. Unfortunately, the team was unable to score the go-ahead runs, despite having runners in scoring position. The Cardinals prevailed and took the opening game of the series by a final score of 14-12.

Jamie Barrios finished the game with three hits in five at-bats. Barrios scored two runs and had three RBIs. Mateo Martinez notched two hits, two runs and three RBIs in four at-bats. Brian McCloskey finished the game with two hits and two runs.

On the mound, Kenneth Dow was credited the loss. He still managed to strikeout three batters and allowed eight hits. In relief, Rob Manetta continued his strong showing. Manetta faced four batters and  struck out one of them, allowing no runs and no hits.

The Panthers and Cardinals will face off two more times tomorrow, March 20 at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex for a non-conference doubleheader. The first game will begin at 11 AM.
