Baseball Unsuccessful in Both Games of Wednesday's Doubleheader Against Plattsburgh

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team was overcome by the Cardinals of SUNY Plattsburgh in both ends of Wednesday's doubleheader. The final scores were 7-1 and 18-5, respectively.

 Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (1) – Plattsburgh (7)

The Panthers finished the early game with only five hits and one run. The team struggled offensively throughout the game. The first hit of the day was a single to left field from Mateo Martinez.

The Cardinals continued to pile their runs throughout the game, but in the top of the fifth inning, their lead-off hitter homered moving the score to 5-0 in favor of the Cardinals.

 The first and only run for the Panthers came in the final moments in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rob Manetta singled to left field. Lou Peluso would pinch run. James Sill had the single to center field that would allow Peluso to score. The Cardinals defeated the Panthers 7-1.

Jamie Barrios, Mateo Martinez. Rob Manetta, James Sill, and Cayden Ysidro were the only players to record a hit in the game for Old Westbury. Peluso recorded the lone run while Sill had the only RBI.

On the mound, Sill made his first start since missing time due to injury. Sill pitched three innings and finished with a strikeout, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned). In relief, Don Whalen had a nice outing after compiling two strikeouts, facing a total of 14 batters.

Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (5) – Plattsburgh (18)

Throughout the second game, OW struggled with their pitching. The Panthers allowed the Cardinals to finish with 11 hits.

The Panthers looked strong out of the gates, putting up three unanswered runs in the first two innings.

After this, the Cardinals put together 18 straight runs without an answer from Old Westbury. The Cardinals led 18-3 at the end of the top of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Panthers rallied for two late runs thanks to a single from Jason Carrion that would score Dominic Felicetti and a single from Lou Peluso which would score Troy Emmanuel.

The Panthers' late runs would be to no avail. Plattsburgh waled away with the win and a sweep of the series with a final score of 18-5.

Troy Emmanuel finished the game with two hits, two runs, and two walks. Rob Manetta, Don Whalen and James Sill each added a hit to their season totals. Jason Carrion finished the game with a hit, a walk and two RBIs. Louis Peluso and Zachary Horowitz each finished the late game with a hit and an RBI.

Joseph Lubrano made his first appearance of the season. He was credited with the loss after facing 11 batters. Lubrano allowed only two hits two walks, and four runs. Michael Pokorny was the final pitcher of the game for the Panthers. Pokorny pitched two innings and struck out four batters, allowing two hits and three runs.

Next up, the Panthers will welcome Baruch College to the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. The non-conference doubleheader will take place on Saturday, March 23. The first game will begin at approximately 11 AM.
