Softball Splits the Day, Falling to Buffalo State in Extra Innings and Defeating Plattsburgh

CLERMONT, Fla. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team split the day on Tuesday, falling to Buffalo State in extra innings, 2-1 and defeating SUNY Plattsburgh 4-2. The Panthers move to 7-1 on the season and continue their hot start to the 2024 campaign.

Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (1) – Buffalo State (2) [Eight Innings]

The two sides kept things close throughout the entire game. Extra innings were needed to decide the winner and the international tie breaker rule costed the Panthers in the end.

The Panthers got their first hit of the game when Taylor Murphy singled in the top of the second  inning. Buffalo State responded in the bottom of the second inning when they scored their first run of the morning after compiling two hits in the inning.

Old Westbury answered right back in the top of the third inning. Jessica Tucci walked in the team's second at-bat of the inning. Heather Dillon pinch ran for the Panthers and on the following at-bat, Alaina Reilly would walk, moving Dillon to second base. Ashley Pierce sent a crucial double to left field, scoring the Panthers' first run from Dillon.

With the score tied at 1-1, neither team could find a way to drive in any more runs.

The game entered extra innings. The Panthers had Natalie Intrieri placed on second base. OW moved the runner thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Reilly. Unfortunately, Old Westbury could not find a way to drive in Intrieri and score a run.

In the bottom of the eight inning, Buffalo State moved their automatic runner thanks to a sacrifice bunt. On the following at-bat, Buffalo State's S. Congelosi singled through the left side, allowing them to walk off the game. Buffalo State defeated Old Westbury, 2-1.

For the Panthers, Ashley Pierce had another strong outing. Pierce went 2-4 at the plate and recorded an RBI and a double. Taylor Murphy, who was named the Skyline Conference's Rookie of the Week last week, went 2-3 at the plate. Heather Dillon scored the team's lone run of the day after serving as a pinch runner for OW.

In the circle, Julia Pastrana picked up her first loss on the year. She faced 28 batters and allowed only two runs and eight hits.

Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (4) – Plattsburgh (2)

The Panthers' second game of the day was filled with excitement, especially in the late going. Three first years for OW had big performances, especially late in the game. The game got off to a strong start for Plattsburgh, as they scored the games' first two runs in the second inning.

Madison Danin, who was named the Skyline Conference's Player of the Week from last week recorded the Panthers' first hit of the second game. Danin launched a double to right center field.

The next hit for the Panthers came from Gianna DiLillo who hit an infield single in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Panthers rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning to combine for four runs and five hits. Juliana Vasquez kicked things off with a single up the middle. From there, Natalie Intrieri singled to left center, and moved Vasquez to second. The hits continued for OW when Alaina Reilly singled to center field scoring Vasquez. Phylicia Cangemi entered the game as a pinch runner.

Christina Ravo made her first pitching appearance of the season in the top of the sixth inning.

The rally continued when Ashley Pierce launched her second double of the day to center field, scoring Intrieri. First Year Amanda Varela pinch ran for Pierce. In the next, at-bat, the reigning player of the week, singled to center field moving the runners ahead a base, and scoring a run from Cangemi.

Madison Muehling would enter the game as a pinch runner and stole second base and caused an errant throw. The poor throw allowed Varela to score from third base. The crucial baserunning of first years Camngemi and Varela helped put the Panthers ahead by two runs.

With the lead in the top of the seventh inning, the Panthers managed to close out the game and defeat the Cardinals by a final score of 4-2.

For the Panthers, Madison Danin had another multi-hit day. Danin went 2-3 at the plate, recording another RBI and a double.  Ashley Pierce recorded another double, going 1-3 at the plate and notching another RBI. Phylicia Cangemi and Amanda Varela each finished with a run. Natalie Intrieri went 1-3 at the dish and also finished the game with a run.

In terms of the pitching duties, Layla Ramos got the start. Ramos faced 24 batters and allowed only six hits and two runs. In her first collegiate pitching appearance, Christina Ravo secured her first win. Ravo threw two innings and allowed only two hits. Ravo faced eight batters and finished with a strikeout.

Next up at THE Spring Games, the Panthers will face off against Washington and Jefferson once again on Thursday, March 21 after defeating them once already on Sunday, 3-2. Old Westbury's second game of the day on Thursday will be against Endicott at 11:30 AM.

Upon returning from Florida, the Panthers will welcome Hunter College to the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex on Monday, April 1 for a non-conference doubleheader at 4 PM.
