Softball Picks Up Another Win in Florida Over Manchester on Thursday Night; Advances to 8-3 on the Season

CLERMONT, Fla. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team has finished their week playing at THE Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The Panthers played a total of seven games, going 4-3 in the Sunshine State. The Panthers will return home with an overall record of 8-3, continuing one of the best starts in OW Softball program history.

The Panthers' Florida playing schedule was changed due to heavy rain on Friday. As a result, the team played three games on Thursday. The Panthers were defeated by both Washington and Jefferson and Endicott but took down Manchester University in walk-off fashion in the night cap.

Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (2) – Washington and Jefferson (3)

The Panthers were in the fight throughout this one. The Presidents got out to an early 1-0 lead scoring in the top of the first inning. It would not be until the fourth inning where the Panthers scored their first run of the game thanks to a sacrifice fly from Jessica Tucci that would allow Amanda Varela (pinch ran) to score.

Washington and Jefferson responded with a run of their own in the top of the fifth inning. Neither team scored in the sixth inning, but it was the Presidents who scored again to put themselves ahead 3-1.

With their backs against the wall, trailing with only three outs left, the Panthers did everything they could to try and spark a rally. Madison Muehling got on base with a lead-off walk. Julia Pastrana would pinch hit and advance the runner to second base. Natalie Intrieri also grounded out but moved the runner into scoring position.

Alaina Reilly had the single up the middle that would allow the Panthers to keep their hope alive. With the score now 3-2, the Panthers were down to their final out. OW was unable to produce any more runs and fell to the Presidents, 3-2.

Ashley Pierce finished the game with another two hits, going 2-4. Gianna DiLillo went 2-3 at the plate. Alaina Reilly and Jessica Tucci each recorded an RBI.

On the mound, Layla Ramos faced 31 batters, pitching the entire game. Ramos recorded four strikeouts, and allowed two walks, five hits, and three runs.

Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (0) – Endicott (8)

The second game of the day might have been the most challenging of the week for the Panthers. They faced a strong Endicott team that gave up only one hit throughout the game.

Endicott finished with eight hits of their own. The Gulls scored three runs in the early going. The Gulls were up 3-0 going into the fourth inning where they really began to open things up.

In the bottom of the fifth inning the Gulls added another run and went ahead, 7-0.

The Panthers were one run away from letting up eight runs, forcing a mercy rule in favor of Endicott. The Gulls scored their eighth and final run of the game in the sixth inning and defeated the Panthers in six innings by a final score of 8-0.

Alaina Reilly had the lone hit of the game for the Panthers. Tylyn LeSane, Taylor Murphy, and Reilly each got on base with a walk.

Taylor Murphy got the start in the circle. She pitched 3.1 innings and finished with two strikeouts. She allowed a total of five runs and only two hits. In relief, Hailey Ragozine faced 16 batters and allowed six hits, and three total runs.

Game Three- SUNY Old Westbury (8) – Manchester (7)

The Panthers made the final game of their Florida trip one of the most exciting.

OW got themselves out to an early lead, putting up six runs in the bottom of the first inning.

With an already comfortable lead, the Panthers piled on another run in the third inning thanks to Hillary Bennett reaching on a fielders' choice, allowing Madison muehling to score.

Manchester rallied as well in the fifth inning. Manchester managed to respond with seven runs of their own and they brought the game back to even.

With the two teams locked up, the Panthers had the opportunity to walk off the game and leave Florida on a winning note.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Amanda Varela led off by getting bit by a pitch. Madison Muehling advanced the runner with a sacrifice bunt. On the following at-bat, Jessica Tucci was walked. Hillary Bennet would then get on base thanks to an error by Manchester's left fielder. With the bases loader and a new pitcher in the game for Manchester, Natalie Intrieri came to the plate.

Natalie Intrieri launched a single down the left field line, allowing the winning run (Varela) to score and give the Panthers the victory. Old Westbury defeated Manchester by a final score of 8-7.

Madison Danin, Natalie Intrieri, Ashley Pierce and Alaina Reilly each finished the game with two hits. Intrieri and Pierce each also had a run and an RBI. Jenna Gaspa, Amanda Varela, Madison Muehling, and Jessica Tucci each finished with runs in the team's walk-off victory.

In the circle, Julia Pastrana got the start. She faced 25 batters and allowed nine hits, and seven runs. Pastrana recorded a strikeout. In relief, Layla Ramos got the win. Ramos finifhed the game with two strikeouts, and allowed only two hits.

After a strong week of practices and games, the Panthers advance to 8-3 on the season. With the team set to return from Florida, their sights are set on the next competition. Next up for OW will be a non-conference doubleheader against Hunter College on Monday, April 1. The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 4 PM at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
