Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's Volleyball Opens Skyline Conference Play With Losses to St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn and Ramapo on Saturday Afternoon

MAHWAH, N.J. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's volleyball team traveled for the first time this season to Mahwah, N.J. to open Skyline Conference play with a tri-match against the Bears of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn and the Roadrunners of Ramapo College. The Panthers were defeated in both matches.

Match Two: SUNY Old Westbury (0) vs St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn (3)

In the Panthers first ever conference match for men's volleyball, the team struggled to get things moving early. The Panthers were shut down for most of the first set after a combination of their own errors and a strong attack from the Bears.

OW finally got things moving in the late going of set number one but it was too little to late. As a team, the Panthers finished the first set with only four kills compared to the Bears' 11 kills.

The second set was a lot closer throughout the match. Both sides went back-and-forth for some time. The lead changed hands multiple times throughout the set all the way to the end. Towards the end of the set, the Panthers brought things to within one point, with a score of 22-23 in favor of the Bears thanks to a kill from Anthony Moyett who was assisted by Kosta Anagnostou. Unfortunately, the Panthers would commit two costly errors to hand the final two points of the set to the Bears. The Panthers finished the second set with eight kills.

In the third set, the Panthers were hungry for revenge. The team fought hard and stayed in it the entire set, but the Bears managed to walk away with the victory despite the late efforts from OW. It was costly errors again in the late going that hurt the Panthers' changes.

Despite the outcome, the Panthers had some strong performers throughout the three sets. Anthony Moyett once again led the Panthers in kills with nine while also recording one ace and six digs. James Seraphin finished the first match with three kills, and two blocks. Kosta Anagnostou had 11 assists and 10 digs. Val Holmes continued to improve, finishing the match with two service aces and a block.

Match Three: SUNY Old Westbury (0) vs Ramapo College (3)

In the tri-match's final match of the day, the Panthers were overcome by the Roadrunners in all three sets. The Panthers could not get much momentum to help them late in any of the three sets.

In the first match, the Panthers only managed to score 10 points.  Kosta Anagnostou impressed again with several assists throughout set number one. The Panthers amassed four kills as a team in the set.

The second set was the Panthers' highest scoring in the match. Despite the 14 points that OW put up, they were still only able to drill four kills. On the other side of the court, the Roadrunners recorded 15 kills.

In the third set, there was much of the same for Old Westbury. A mixture of errors and fatigue combined to hold them back in the late going. The Panthers finished with only two kills in their final set of the day.
Throughout the match, the Panthers recorded 14 attacking errors, four service errors, and nine receiving errors.

Anthony Moyett had another strong match in green and white. Moyett finished the final match with seven kills, one block and five digs. James Seraphin recorded two kills. Jose Lorenzo Santos ended up with six digs, leading the Panthers in the match.

Despite their losses on the road, the Panthers are continuing to build their new program. The team will turn their attention towards their next match which brings fellow Skyline Conference opponent, the Maccabees of Yeshiva University, to town on Tuesday, March 5. The match will begin at 6:00 PM in the Clark Center Gymnasium.
