Men's Volleyball Secures Their First Win in Program History After Defeating Yeshiva University on Tuesday Night

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's volleyball team notched their first win in program history on Tuesday night in a Skyline Conference match against the Maccabees of Yeshiva University. The Panthers were victorious 3-2.

This year, Old Westbury entered their first official season as an NCAA recognized program after playing only exhibition games last year. The past season showcased only road matches for OW.

The Panthers were hot from the start, getting off to an early lead in the first set. Anthony Moyett had a career game tonight. In the first set, as a team, the Panthers recorded eight kills. Towards the end of the set, the Panthers managed to walk away with the set win thanks to several errors made by the Maccabees.

In the second set, it was the other way around. The Panthers committed several costly errors throughout the set, finishing with 13 errors as a unit. Despite this, the Panthers managed to come back in the end and make ti a very competitive set. The two teams needed to play to 31 points to decide the set. The Panthers lost the set 29-31. Old Westbury recorded 15 kills as a team in the second set.

The third set was another nail-biter for both teams. Towards the end of the set, Val Holmes, James Seraphin and Anthony Moyett all combined with crucial kills to give the Panthers the victory. Old Westbury won the third set, 25-23.

Despite having 13 kills as a team in the fourth set, the Panthers were edged out by the Maccabees. The Panthers started off strong but fell apart in the late going. The Maccabees gained their momentum after a crucial timeout to send them through the finish line, winning the set. The Maccabees won the fourth set, 25-21.

In the match's deciding fifth set, the Panthers were a step behind from the start. The Maccabbes led 7-2 before OW went on a massive run to draw the match closer. The Panthers would score seven straight points to flip the score to 9-7. A big part of the momentum shift was thanks to Ashel Santos' two service aces.

Both sides then went back and forth for several points. Down the stretch, the Maccabees made a late comeback effort and even brought the game to even thanks to a kill from Jonathan Werta.

After two major errors by Yeshiva, the Panthers took a page in the history books and won their first match in SUNY Old Westbury men's volleyball program history. The Panthers secured the victory with a 16-14 fifth set victory. OW defeated YU three sets to two in the down-to-the wire Skyinle Conference battle.

When asked about what this win means to this team and program, Head Coach Ryan Pastuch said "I am so excited for the team. They put in the work and were determined to get it done. They showed a lot of heart to come back in that fifth set and get the win. I am so proud of them and honored to be a part of this program's history. This is a really special group, and they deserve this one".

Another major performance came from James Seraphin who had 14 kills, and three blocks. Val Holmes once again led the team in blocks with five.
