Baseball Downs St. Joseph's Brooklyn in Both Ends of Sunday's Doubleheader

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team picked up two big conference wins on Sunday against the Bears of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn. The Panthers defeated the Bears 9-4 in the first game and 22-2 in the second game. These two conference wins help advance the Panthers to a perfect 4-0 against the Skyline Conference and 7-8 on the season. 
 
Old Westbury had two strong games offensively. The Panthers took advantage of the conditions and the field and had several balls leave the park. 
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (9) – St. Joseph's- Brooklyn (4)
 
For the Panthers, James Sill returned to the mound. Sill had a strong outing, picking up the win and going six innings. In his outing, the Long Island native allowed only six hits and one earned run. Sill struck out eight batters and walked two. 
 
Sill also had a strong day at the plate as he finished the first game going 1-3 at the plate with two runs, two RBIs and a homerun. 
 
Another key contributor for the Panthers was Mateo Martinez who finished the game going 2-2 at the plate, scoring two runs and recording an RBI. Troy Emmanuel had two doubles and went 2-3 at the plate. Emmanuel batted in one run and also had a run.  
 
At the plate, Rob Manetta went 1-3, picking up a run and hit a double. Manetta would transition from catcher to pitcher and threw an inning of relief. Manetta allowed no runs or hits and struck out two of the three batters he faced. 
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (22) – St. Joseph's- Brooklyn (2)
 
The Panthers combined for a total of 20 hits in the late game of Sunday's doubleheader. Jamie Barrios led the charge offensively finishing the game with four hits in five at-bats. Barrios recorded four runs and had two RBIs. Nick Giovanakis, Rob Manetta, and Brian McCloskey each had multi-hit games and each recorded runs and RBIs. 
 
James Sill had another standout game as the team's DH. At the plate in the late game, Sill went 3-4 and scored another two runs and had seven RBIs. Sill launched another homerun, taking advantage of the ballpark. 
 
On the mound, Frank Whitenack got the start. Whitenack faced 21 batters and went three innings. Whitenack allowed only three hits and an earned run while striking out five batters. Kyle Gaertner came in for a relief appearance where he picked up the win. Gaertner allowed only two hits and no runs. He finished with four strikeouts in four innings. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will prepare for a non-conference game against New Jersey City University. The Knights and the Panthers will face off at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex on Tuesday, March 26 at 4 PM.
